What's with laptop manufacturers putting in smaller and smaller screens these days? 1440 x 900 on a 17" screen? What, am I that blind? I'm not paying for a 17" laptop just to have the font look bigger :/

I've looked around. but there just aren't very many people out there making Core I7s yet, and those don't really come close to the specs I want.

Anyone know of a 17" laptop with a core i7 (mobile) processor, and 1920x1200 resolution (not a fan of 1080), preferably with 2 hard drives slots and able to take more than 6 gigs of RAM? I don't really care about the video card, it's mostly going to be for image processing and software development (which is why I need the big resolution).

Also, price range around $1300 would be best, lower would be better, of course (but that might be difficult).

Thanks!

Well 1080p is becoming more mainstream than the usual 1920x1200, i expect very little laptops to have it, probably desktops as well. So this is gona be really hard to get, some of the last years laptops still had 16:10 screens, but most of the new ones come with 1080 / 16:10 screen, and since i7 is new dont expect many laptops with your desired ratio.

Probably your best bet will be Dell Studio 17, with an i7 they start around $1099 and with dual HD around 1224, with a 900p screen, to upgrade to 1080 screen you go toward $1374, if you cant pass or want cheaper with those specs check their outlet or refurbs.

Another option would be Asus G72Gx-RBBX09 $1299, i know no i7, but Q9000 is a good cpu, and you can upgrade to QX9300 later on if you really need the a higher clocked quad. Also no 16:10 screen but 1600x900 is decent, comes already with dual hardrives, and 6gb of memory, and as plus comes with a GTX260m, so in case someday you wanna play some games it can. I would take this over the dell but that just my opinion.

You should be able to score the new Dell studio 17 for around that much.

It's got a core i7, ATI 4650, and available 1920x1080 LED screen. Added bonuses would be backlit keyboard, 2 hard drive bays, slot loading optical drive, hdmi, display port, and a JBL 2.1 sound system.

It's a rock solid laptop.

Except for the video, thats too slow to use for gaming for me. I too am looking for a i7 19200x1200 17" laptop. Hopefully with a 260m in it. Trying to stay under $1200 though.

The lowest starting laptop with those specs is the Asus G51J, its around $1400, search for used/recondition might be able to get it inside $1200.

Yeah, I know. I may have to bite the bullet and just get a Duo instead. Id rather give some on the CPU, and keep the 260m. Should play most games fine.

smaller screen, because the notebooks GPU will not be able to power the screen's native res, if too high, after a year or so at high settings on new games.

What you are looking for is nonexistent right now. No one is selling such a high res core i7 system for 1300, not even close.

But you can get one around 1300 with a 1600x900 resolution. And you know what? that is more than enough.

I am using a 20" monitor for my desktop and the resolution is 1680x1050, and this is a much larger screen than a 17" on a laptop. This res is fine, and so is 1600x900. So suck it up and get one of those. You do not need the higher resolution. And if you think you do, save up for an external monitor later.

That's what I was thinking.

On a 17" monitor 1920x1200 is kind of silly. Pixel density grows with the square of the diagonal length... so a 17" monitor has 1/2 the area of a 24" monitor. It can literally be at 1366x768 and have the same pixel density as a 24" monitor at 1920x1200.

A 17" with 1600x900 has much greater pixel density than a 24" at 1920x1200.

This is one of the reasons why i prefer lower res than higher on my laptop. 1368x768 feel a lot like my desktop ratio, just smaller screen (and a little less on the vertical side :( ), but overall its pretty much the same feeling. And the second reason is that this are not real GT200 cards, this are G92 slightly oc cards, so its more or less like 8800gt/9800gtx, so pushing 1900x1200 on them its gona be hard on new titles, while the 1368x768 res play much better for those type of cards, again this is how i see things, mostly to optimize gameplay, if you do any picture editing or video editing or multitasking and have a great eyesight, then i can see higher res being better, its just not my case.

Look up the hp dv8t or the toshiba qosimo 550x

Don't you mean the Qosmio 505?

There is a 505-830 and a 505-850, only difference i can see is 2GB of ram totaling 6 and a 64GB SSD, 18.4" LCD either way, and an i7. the lower end model is close to what you are looking at price wise.

I'm typing on a 1920x1200 17" screen right now. It's perfect. I'm not worried about being able to run every game at 1920x1200 with max settings... I'm not really that much of a gamer anymore... but I do a lot of programming, and the extra screen real estate is essential... small text is not a problem for me... I actually really like the high pixel density. If I need things bigger I can always can always scale the UI in windows 7.

So, yes, I want 1920x1200. If I could go higher, I would.

It's possible $1300 won't cut it, that I can believe, but I think that's more because no one's making 1920x1200 anymore, for some reason.

Oh yeah, and I use a 1920x1200 24" with my desktop at work, too, only because I can't really afford the 2560x1600 30" screen. Resolution is king :)

So, I finally broke down and got an HP Dv8t. The screen is only 1920x1080, but I guess I'll live. The main reason for buying it is the $500 off coupon that made it $1000 (coupon ends today).

So, what I got was:
1920x1080 18.4" screen
1.66GHz Core i7
4 GB RAM (upgradeable to 8)
320GB 7300 RPM Hard Drive (spare HD slot open - hoping to save up for an SSD)
Blu-Ray Reader
GeForce GT 230M

Pretty damn good for $1000. Not 100% the computer I wanted, but what I want doesn't seem to exist (except for the Clevo desktop-CPU monstrosities... and I can't afford them anyway).

My brother jumped on the same deal except with the dv6. Great deal.

At least on the 18.4" things will be a bit less tiny. Though I see you like it tiny with tons of space.

Great, I was going to buy the exact same computer with that coupon only the website I went to said it was going to expire on nov 30. I just tried the coupon and it won't work. And i'm not going to pay $300 more, this is really dissapointing.

For what it's worth, at the price he is getting it at, the company is probably losing money. At best not making any at all.

I realize we are not supposed to care when buying, but there it is.

What would be the point of releasing sucha code then and then having it expire 24 hrs later? Just to gain exposure for a new product?

Not sure. Maybe it is to get higher promotion for using them as a go to place for purchases. They would then likely alot a certain amount of lost money and cut it off at a later point.

I can tell you retail stores sell laptops at cost or even below cost all the time. The goal is to get people in the door to try to attach accessories and services so they can actually turn a profit. And even then, the numbers of laptops they sell at a loss is not infinite, they accept a certain number to get people in the door.

The G51J has 1920x1080 not 1200 fyi.

Also I got mine from J&R (+++++++) for 1349 (NIB) during the past holidays. Placed my order when it was out of stock and they let me keep the price when it came in stock. Plus, Bing cash back on top of that too!

Of course when I checked a few days later they jacked up the price to 1499 or something insane like that - something which alot of vendors seemed to have done during the holiday season. When I was shopping around ZZF did the same thing with the price plus cancelled my previous order at the lower price to make me place a new order at the new higher price. Eff that, then I stumbled on J&R - thank you froogle.com!

googled to get here, also looking for a i7 1920x1200, seems like most have gone to 1920x1080 so I'm pretty much out of luck? don't want to spend more than $1500, not a gamer, just want the screen real estate...
