Could setting up VPN work for this?

Alright. Here is what I'm looking for. What would be the easiest way to create connection between my brother's house and my house?

My brother has many video clips that I want to watch and so far, I've been either driving to his house to copy them to external HDD or watch it with my iPad using airvideo.

I just thought about if there's a way to watch it directly from my HTPC. Is there program that can stream video like airvideo and as good as airvideo? Also, I just briefly read about openvpn. Could this be an option? Create VPN between my pc and my brother's PC which hosts all video files and watch directly using video player?
 
VPN would only be needed if you want to encrypt what you are streaming as it travels over the internet. Plus, the overhead may cost you in video quality and/or streaming speed. I have been using subsonic to stream from my WHS and found it to be very slick.
