Because shims are useless? Maybe by the time Bartons were released, people realized shims were....useless?
I remember there were lot's of shims for the older Athlons as those did not have the mount pads on the packaging. The little rubber feet on the later package made shims unecessary.

partially because the core got big enough with the added cache, so the likelihood of cracking it went down a bit.
you should still be careful though. i think heatspreaders are the best way to go when protecting a core, even though it means higher temps.

Due to the fact that they use the OPGA process (fiberglass substrate) and not the CPGA process anymore (ceramic substrate).
OPGA has more flex...
