A freinds laptop has this dialog box that keeps repeating infinitely and using 99% of the machines time...

"ERROR C:\USERS\x\AppData\Roaming\xxxx.dll"

Over and over, and I can't figure out how to stop it, or what's causing it.

Anyone run into this?

sounds like the computer got infected.

boot in safe mode, scan scan scan.

unless the name of the file isn't really "xxxx.dll" but still, DLLs shouldn't be in an AppData folder in a users's profile folder?

If that isn't the exact file name, I would try googling the real filename to see what comes up.

The actual file name changes each time, it just error then error, etc, etc piling up a bazillion dialog boxes.

The format of the filename is "c00A45CD.mat"

Just plain weird. Its on a laptop so it is scanning... but it takes sooooo long.

definitely sounds like it's infected to me.

DLL files really shouldn't exist in that folder; especially randomly-named ones

Avira found a ton of crap, but after clearing the crazy returned.

Eset online found:

AdwareXPPoliceAntivirus
a variant of Kryptik.BLS trojan

Laptop died also, unrelated I hope, so I don't know if its fixed. I ran the Eset on the drive after I yanked it out and hooked it up to my PC.

So if you ever have insane dialog boxes with .mat file errors in an infinite loop... maybe this info will help.
