I'm not sure if it's totally dead, but my Viewsonic VX924 began flickering on and off and staying off until I power cycled it or gave it a firm slap to the side. It has been transported a lot through it's life so I was thinking it could be a broken solder somewhere.

Any ideas and is it safe to crack it open? It's well out of the warranty and was a replacement model for a previously failed one.

I've had a Samsung 970P go out the same way; it's almost certainly the backlight failing and not like a loose solder point on a CRT gun. I'm not sure what the MTBF is on these CCFL's, but they're not easy to replace and get the panel back together perfectly.
