Lately my 40GB IBM has started making annoying beeping sounds at me, so I downloaded the Deskstar ID utility. It told me I should upgrade the drive's firmware to FA5AA, but I can't seem to find that so far. Anybody got it handy?

Obtain the proper firmware update
If you have a 2179, 2284, 6643, 6832, or 6833 system and the firmware revision of your IBM DeskStar hard disk drive is of the form xxxIxxxx, where x can represent any number or letter, then you should update your firmware with the file (pz2z16us.exe) displayed above. If the firmware revision of your IBM DeskStar hard disk drive is of the form xxxOxxxx, then you should update your firmware with the file (pz2z18us.exe). Please note that the distinguishing factor is the fourth digit of the firmware revision. For all other systems listed in the Affected configurations section above, please update the firmware with file pz2z16us.exe. If you have questions about which firmware to use, just download and use the Identification Utility for IBM Deskstar hard drives.

Well, not sure what to make of this...

Well, after discussion with HGST, and actually looking at the drive, it turns out it has Apple firmware on it. Anybody got a toll-free number for Apple support? I'm looking but I haven't found it yet...

Anybody else feel an "Oh, Fuck!" coming on?

I didn't know that hard drive firmware could be branded. :(

Yeah, it's quite common on SCSI drives, less so on IDE... Anyway I called Apple and they said the firmware is germaine to whatever system it came in. I guess I have to try and find an Apple specialist...

Boy is there egg on my face...

The beeping sound wasn't the hard drive at all, as I took it out and continued using the PC without it. The beeping recurred - my CPU was getting too hot. I cleaned off the core and heatsink, and put on a fresh layer of '5 ... temp down by ~15-20 degrees.
