Will my old 9800 Pro agp graphics card support a 22" widescreen LCD using DVI?

yes but gaming, no not at native...

Can you explain more? Not at native? are you saying it will work in games but not in windows? Or that it will work in windows but not in games? Or it will work in both just not at native res?

Yes, it should, assuming the LCD's native res. is a standard one like 1440x900 or 1680x1050...

I have no idea what note235 was talking about above, though...

It'll work just fine, I wouldn't try any gaming though, and FYI thats the highest res you will get, as 1920x1200 and 2500x1600 require dual link DVI, the 9800PRO is only single.

I think he was saying that you're probably not going to be able to play the latest games at the native resolution (1680x1050)... I can't even run Quake 4 decently at my native res (1280x1024)...

2500x1600 may require dual-link DVI. However, 1920x1200 does not; my Dell 2407WFP is a single-link DVI display, and its native resolution is 1920x1200.

To the original poster, the card should work fine at 1920x1200 for everyday work in Windows. However, the reason everyone recommends not gaming is that the Radeon 9800's performance just isn't good enough to play games at 1920x1200. Unless you're playing older games, today's modern stuff will probably top out on that card at 1024x768 in most cases. If you truly wish to play games, you should either buy a higher-end graphics card, or stick with a display that has a lower native resolution.

I have two systems attached to my Dell; one is running Windows Vista Ultimate RC2 at 1920x1200, with an All-In-Wonder Radeon 9700.

I've run the old 865G integrated graphics at 1920x1200 and it worked fine in Windows, so you should be fine with a 9800Pro. I run a 22" widescreen on a 9800AIW.

I've been using a 9800 Pro at 1920x1200 on a Dell 2405 playing stuff like WoW for a long time now, it works great. (Dunno how it handles all the latest and greatest games, but it runs games of its generation quite well at high resolutions.)

9800XT with the DELL 2405.

works fine for desktop.

only 1 game runs 1920*1200 at an 'acceptable' frame rate - Guild Wars.

ive dropped it down to 1080 fora bit more smoothness.

What everyone is saying is that it will technically work, but the GPU will not not be fast enough to run games with playable performance at those high resolutions.

If you aren't playing games though it should support 1920x1200 in Windows just fine.

Seconding this. Before I built my current computer, I had an AGP Radeon 9800 Pro pushing a Dell 2405FPW without any problems. Not blazing fast, but definitely gets the job done.

My older computer was 2.4ghz 1gig ram and a 9800 pro 128mg(only using 4x agp slot, not 8x). I ran half life 2, oblivion, and other games at 1440x900 mediumish settings. Quake 4 required the most tweaking for that card. Anything above 1440x900 on a 9800 just isn't going to work for gaming..
