Doom3 128mb vs 256mb Video ram?

So has anyone done comparisons on a Radeon98Pro 128 vs 256mb? I'm surprised its not posted on hardocp's front page yet...
 
The difference would be negligable, except at very high resolutions/IQ settings--settings that a 9800pro probably shouldn't be running.
 
From what I have seen, you can not run D3 in high quality with only 128mb of video ram. All the textures quickly fill up the video ram and become dependent on system memory. I have a Ti4600 and was dropping frames a lot at 800x600 on high quality. I lower it down to medium quality and was able to up the res to 1024x768 and it was much smoother. Now is a 9800Pro stong enough to drive the extra textures and effects at high quality? I dont know, but with 256mb of video ram you at least have a chance.

Yeah. Heck, even my 9700 Pro runs DOOM III fine at 1024x768 on HIGH, plus 2x AA. The 9800 Pro is even better than the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro. Both have 128mb of memory. I think this whole DOOM III thing was way too hyped. Also I have tried Ultra on my 9700 Pro, with 1024x768 with no AA and it ran at a pretty much constant 30fps, except when you could see the stutter when my systems RAM was being utilized. Thats pretty sad considering a card I bought in 2003 for a mere $300 is capable of running this so called "next-gen" game fairly well, if not exceptionally well. I would love too see you 6800 GT guys playing 1600x1200 Ultra, a feet which would be easily accomplished based on my humble system. All things considered, the amount of memory that ID stated that was needed was crap. 512mb is not needed to accomplish Ultra, and if a 128mb is capable, I would certainly hope a 256mb one can.

I HIGHLY doubt you get acceptable FPS with those settings with a 9700Pro.
I get lots of chugging when opening doors or getting in battles in 1024X768 high no AA on my freshly formatted system.

dude, i run Doom 3 at high quality, 1024x768 with 2xAA and 4xAF without pretty descent performance on my OC'd 9600 pro. sure, sometimes it dips into the lower 20's, but it's still very playable. system specs in sig.

I'm too old school to upgrade. heh.
 
I run at 1600x1200 high with 4xAA and 4xAF. I have a geforce 6800 128mb, dual athlon MP 1600+ procs, and 512 mb pc2100. my fps ranges between 25 to 60. Sometimes it stutters for a split second when opening doors, but other than that it is very playable. The duallies make things seem very smooth.

also, can someone with a similar configuration tell me about their experiences with doom 3 as well? With my specs, I didn't think doom 3 would run this well, but I was definitely wrong. Dual processor support seems to be very well implemented.
 
i have a 9800 AIW pro and im running @ 1280x1024 medium settings and it only twice during marine difficulty did it lag.
 
When I said very high resolutions / IQ settings I was thinking >1280x1024 and/or Ultra. Something, again, a 9800 class card (with either 128 or 256 of ram) should not be running. I realize that a 128mb card can play at High Quality settings at good (1024x768) resolution, but he was asking specifically about a 9800 pro 128 vs 256 and at those settings the performance difference would be negligable.

I use 1024x768 high no aa on a fresh install too, and I go back and forth between medium and high. Medium is almost completely smooth, high gives me the infamous door lag and some slow down in large fights. Some people have really low standards for smoothness in games. 9600pro at 1024 high quality x2 aa, yeah sure if you don't mind that much choppiness.

Shit my 9800pro can go 1280x1024 Ultra and it is "playable" ;) Sure it drops to 20 fps around certain rooms and whenever there is more than 1 imp on the screen but it looks damn good when you are standing still, alone, looking at the graphics.
 
At times like this I longingly look back at the time when 3dfx ruled the 3d world. :(
 
9800 Pro, 1024x768, on high, system below (9800 at 430/340). I have never ever experienced stuttering. I turned on v-sync to prevent that massive tearing D3 has, so I'm always locked in at 30 fps, and I never drop below. When I go to 1280x1024, it runs very well, but it is slightly jerky, and when I'm fighting, I can't have that, so I use 1024x768 and it's just dandy.

i prefer the game to be as smooth as possible and i require 1280x1024 res sooooooooo.

i run at high with no AA/AF which usually annoys me but the game seems fine. and i never drop bellow 25fps

4.9 beta cats and 418/384 clocks

yet to try ultra high should be interesting though
 
So if 256mb barely makes a difference, whats the point of 256mb or even 512mb video cards?? C'mon, there must be more than just "negligible" differences. Doom3 is the next gen game, it should take advantage of the extra ram?
 
its most likely negligable because doom3 uses the system memory like a swap file.. the problems i belive if i remember right its the video memory gets fragmented wich reduces preformance.. just wait til unreal engine 3 based game comes out... that will prob be the time you might need 256.. other then that maybe you need 256 if you want 1600x1200 on ultra..

If you read what I typed more closely you'd see that I was rather specific about where the extra vram would make a difference and where it wouldn't. For further clarification though...

at 1024x768 High Quality (which is right around what a 9800 pro can play at comfortably I'd say) the difference between 128mb and 256mb would be minute.

However at say, 1280x1024 Ultra Quality, you should see quite appreciable gains by the move up to 256mb from 128. The problem being that I'm not sure the 9800Pro GPU could actually handle that kind of workload at a playable framerate. Thus making the extra 128mb ram moot.

As I don't have a 9800Pro to test with these are, of course, estimations. But I doubt that I'm too far off.
 
I really don't see how any drops below 30 fps at any time could be considered "playable." I can feel mine stutter when it drops to 40 fps from a steady 50 or 60 on 1024x768 High noAA. IQ is a small thing to sacrifice to avoid a slide show :rolleyes:
 
a dip below 30 fps for 1 second does not bother me when the rest of the time it runs very playable. and the dips happen rarely.

3.0C, 1GB Ram, 9800 Pro (all stock). 1280*1024. everything set to high in doom 3, high qual textures in ATI CP but no AA.
