I figured I'd post this to help other Win 8 users out. When I first got Win 8, I noticed explorer was dying, so reading around the web I found some users posting that they found the NVidia control panel desktop context menu was causing this. And the solution is to download shellexview and disable the NVidia context menu handler. This can be done without any bad side effects, you can still open NVidia control panel from the Windows control panel, but it removes the right click on desktop NVidia context menu option.
Anyway, it fixed my crashes, so if anyone else has this issue you could try it as well: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html - btw it's freeware. Just run it, and sort by company name, then disable all NVidia items.
