file sharing (not responding)

I have one computer set up for as a file server. Now everytime I try to access the folder from my other machine I keep getting a (not responding) error. Then I have to wait for like 1 min then I can finally get into my folder on the server. Is there a way where I can elimate this problem?

Do you have simple file sharing turned on?

and how are the two comptuers networked together?
