Just because you think your rights have been violated because your employer used Google to check up on you, that isn’t always the case. The courts have decided employers are within their rights to “google” you.

This story starts when government investigators suspected that David M. Mullins was misusing government property. At the time, Mullins was a technician at the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Forecast Office in Indianapolis, which is part of the U.S. Commerce Department.

Hell, they can do more than just googling you.

i think i got a job from my google search. my employer saw i was very involved in the community.

A lot of places will even check your CREDIT FFS!!! It wouldn't be a big deal, except credit "checks" show up on your credit report.

If I was an employer, I'd google, myspace, and facebook their happy ass before I even interviewed them.

The only thing I don't like about it is, mistaken identity.. Sometimes you google a name and wind up with hits on 5 or 6 different people with the same name.. That would suck if you were, say, working with kids and somebody with your same exact name turned up in a Google search was in some article as a suspect in child porn or molestation charges!

Well I dont think just a blanket search is going to do it. There would have to be some research done to make sure that it is the right person or YES someone is getting sued. I mean with my name.....I have no recourse for a mistaken identity. My background via a google search is very clear that it is me because of my name and my history. now www.zabasearch.com i think goes to far. every address and phone number i have ever had in my life is on that sight. :(

I was googled, investigated all the way back to South Africa  These guys combed me more over than Donald Trumps hair. They go all the way here, credit checks, history checks, criminal checks, education checks, drug checks, you name it.

in all fairness, if you can be googled and all of your negative stuff come up, you are a pretty bad person

Mullins was eventually accused of misuse of a government vehicle, misuse of official time, misuse of a government travel card, and falsification of official travel documents. His supervisor identified 78 occasions when the Commerce Department believed that Mullins had misused a government vehicle.

Some examples: Mullins worked in Indianapolis, but his government-issued credit card showed purchases of gasoline in Tennessee and Ohio. He admitted to unauthorized cash withdrawals from his government-issued credit card. He acknowledged forging travel documents (by sleeping in his car and then printing up fake hotel receipts).

Being a government employee myself (USAF enlisted), If I had done those things I would be in a lot more trouble than just getting fired. I'd be facing possible jail time. Further reading of the article states that he was fired by the Air Force. I don't know how google revealed that info but if it did maybe he should stop being such a tool and maybe the government should stop hiring his fraudulent ass. I don't want your tax dollars paying my paycheck to be taxed to pay his. (funny how things work)
