An interesting technique I saw last year was to use shorter exposures like 1/250 second and a wide open aperture with an ISO around 500->800 to stop the action. madFive first opened my eyes to this technique last year. I used my 50mm prime lens at f/2.2 and 1/250 and ISO 500 on my D300 and 7fps continuous shooting with good success. The shots look really cool if you can get the fireworks burst to fill the photograph, or if you combine a bunch of bursts in post editing. An instant after the fireworks explode looks really awesome.

Here are 2 from 6/29 of the Plymouth, MN fireworks. I was about 10 miles away, shooting with my 70-300 @200-300mm.
