Man, that MSI is all different kinds of ugly.

Man, that second post is all different kinds of hatorade.

Anyways, I'm hoping for a decent Acer model with A10 without extra dedicated gfx chip -- ie, better than 1366x768 rez. 1920x1200 is too much, but perhaps 1600x900 ... is that a popular resolution for laptops still?

Needs SSD and Fast Ram :\

Why is this thing 1.2K? You can get dedicated GFX for cheaper. The BD-Rom is interesting.

$100 more gives you a 17-inch screen and an 8000-series card.

35W 32nm mobile chip. Not too excited about that.

It has a nice discrete GPU, but $1300 for such a middling performance CPU is kind of outrageous.

That isn't even their flagship desktop APU. Just a random part. Where is everything else?
AMD prioritizes shipments to OEM's rather than the DIY market. Intel does the same but they have better supply than AMD due to better/more fabs.

as much as i like amd, my thoughts exactly. even at $999 it would be tough.

Ok? This is a retail box CPU, not an OEM machine.
If they're selling most of their CPU's to OEM's then there is less or even none to go for retail. This is why sometimes there is a months long delay in seeing new AMD retail CPU's even though the chip is already released and shipping in OEM laptops/PC's.

Every manufacturer always sells the bulk of their chips to OEMs, nothing is new there. There is also no big supply issue for them right now, and the chips launched months ago where the laptop models were supposed to have shown up more than a month ago. All we have right now is one high end laptop part out from MSI. Also, since it all the CPUs are derived from the same silicon it is puzzling that when they finally do offer a retail box variant, it is of the neutered variety. It really appears they are just trying to shed old inventory before bringing in the new, I doubt it is in any way related to the OEMs. Just a bit strange that a random midrange part shows up in retail first.

Its the degree to which they're forced to do it that makes the difference. AMD has always been severely supply constrained. Even when things were much better for them the best they could hope to do is provide 30% of the market supply for x86 CPU's. That is a major reason why Intel was able to do so well despite having a mediocre CPU back in the P4 days.

Based on what information? AFAIK no one knows what AMD/GF/TSMC's yields are for Bulldozer much less Richland CPU's but the rumor was saying for a long time that they were fairly bad for BD.

Which suggests they're supply constrained right? Unless you can show where else those CPU's are going if the yields are good...

Don't see how you keep thinking they are constrained in supply. Llano had issues with GloFo but Trinity was fine. Not saying that it couldn't be the case, but for me it's much more believable that they are just getting rid of tons of old shit for supply and tax reasons. Especially considering that Sim City promo for APU purchases, which was supposed to be extended for Richland but has not thus far. Hardly any mention of Richland at all out of AMD since launch, actually.

AMD has had to throw away a huge amount of cash with GF just to reduce production with them and cancelled several 28nm chips in 2012 and they're stuck with Piledriver for pretty much all of 2013 on the desktop. If they hadn't covered their bases by also taking out contracts at TSMC for production we might not even have Temash/Kabini right now.

Again no one knows the details except AMD but something is clearly still wrong with GF's process tech. You do not see a company cancelling products and switching to other manufacturers if everything is going good much less OK.

I agree that GloFo was and continues to be a problem for AMD, but I don't think it's directly related to the lack of Richland stuff right now. Llano had supply issues but Trinity went out fine and Richland is on the same 32nm process.

Not saying that it couldn't be, though. As you said, only AMD and its partners have the details.
