Folding Problem

I use F@H 5.02, the graphical one, and now it's not folding. It is either saying "Attempting to send results" or "Attempting to get work packet" and it won't ever go to the folding part any more. I have restarted the proggie, but it won't start folding. It's been doing this for the past couple of days, and i want to get things rolling again.

Also, i'd like to switch to the text client, but i'm not sure where to start. I'd like for it to run in the background no matter who's logged in. My mom and i use different logins (winxp home) and we often have two on at once. I'd like to be able to run F@H when no one is logged it, for greater performance. Is that possible? What do i need to know?

the 5.02 console version has a service installer on it... I believe that it starts when the PC is booted, and will run in the background, no matter the user... and follow the instructions here to get started...

I can't help you as to why the graphical one won't work, I've never used it... If it still happens with the console version, I'd check with the settings to see if ports are blocked or the usual "can't get to ____" net problems....

Keep on Folding!!

I'm trying the textual one right now....

The program will continue in non-service mode now, working in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop.
The next time the computer is starts up, you should see work automatically
continue there. Note that when this service is running, you should not try
to manually run F@H from that directory at the same time.

I have all the stuff located on my desktop, is that a problem?

Which are you using, the console or the graphical version?

If you are still using the graphical version, I believe the newest version for that is 5.03 and you mentioned you were using 5.02. I believe there were some problems with that one that 5.03 fixed.

The console version is at 5.02 though. It gets a bit confusing at times when I go to the site to download a copy for another system. I always see the 5.03 and think they updated the console version when it is juse the graphical version.

I'm afraid I can't help you on the graphical version since I have only used the console. If you are still using the console version and it will not crunch a unit or won't get a new one. You can just delete the folder and start over with a new copy. I would suggest downloading a new copy of the console first in case there was something wrong with the original download. Also, if you have the console configured as a service, make sure you run the program with the -configonly flag and have it uninstall the service before you delete the folder.

The main reason I have problems with getting packets is due to firewall issues.

I checked on my dually PII 266 box and noticed that one of the processes wasn't running and did a little looking into it. I obviously have it set to run timeless WUs since I don't think it would make the deadline for about anything else and it couldn't get a WU. It had been trying since probably 3 am to get one. I looked on Stanford's server stats page and the reason it wasn't getting a WU was because the server it was trying to connect to seemed to be overloaded. This is something I have a tendancy to forget about. It's also why I don't install folding as a service on my own personal boxen. With the window sitting there it's a lot easier to see if the client is having a problem connecting and what server. I know I can pull it from the log file but it's just easier to bring the window up.

Thanks, I guess I was pissing in the wind again, as its going. Must have been server overload. I find it helps just to restart.

Also, in roague_jedi's script thing, do I have to set the ip address correctly? I know that people use that script to borg, and it seems that they wouldn't be changing the client file on the fly, but apparently that's necesary. I thought it was something you could just stick it, and it would go.

Where is there an IP in the autoinstaller? I didn't think there was one...

From teh client.cfg thinger.

[settings]
username=apHytHiaTe
team=33
asknet=no
bigpackets=yes
machineid=1
local=29

[http]
active=no
host=192.168.1.2
port=8080
usereg=no
usepasswd=no

Sooo.... If I put this on a pendrive and had the client.cfg all fixed up, i could just pop it into any box and it would autoinstall f@h?

again from the client.cfg thinger.

host=192.168.1.2
port=8080
usereg=no
usepasswd=no

:p

that's there on purpose. if there needs to be a proxy set (say in a work environment) then the setting needs to be changed. otherwise that can be left alone and it won't hurt anything.

and hypothetically, yes. (it is untested by me as of yet)

OK, so since the ip doesnt matter if the proxy is diabled, does the machineid or local matter?

it shouldn't - are you having problems again? if so, just delete the client.cfg and run fold -configonly & restart the service. That should fix it.

Nope, no troubles, I was just curious about the client.cfg thing for borging purposes.

EDIT: Thanks soo much guys for all your help. Fold on! w00t! :D

MachineID is only important if you are running between two to eight copies on the same box then every one needs to be different.

Local is just the number of work units done by that client.

Luck.......... :D

Thanks Tigerbitten!

I probably would have gotten flamed on other forums for asking such n00b13 questions, but you guys were great. I guess all you want out of me is my cycles ;)

No, it's not all we want. Well, that's what most of us want. The Moose over in the corner checking you out could be a different story though. :eek:
