For those of you that have successfully passed through USB

How did you do it? I've tried everything.

Running ESXi 5

I have esxi installed on a usb drive so if I accidently pass-through the controller its on I can easily move it. My question is after passing a controller though to a server 08R2 vm the VM sees the controller in device manager but i've tried a flash drive in every single usb port except the one esxi is installed on and I get nothing. That includes the unused USB headers inside the case! Short of trying every single controller 1 by 1 and hoping for the best is there any way to get this to work?

Are you using ESXi 5.0 or 5.1? I had mine working flawlessly until I upgraded from 5.0 to 5.1. Now it won't passthrough the USB.

I have it working for an external HDD in 5.1, but I dont think it was passthrough, it was a special USB option in the vm's edit hardware, I wish I had a console in front of me to look....

I'll check when I get home.

yes this is 5.1. What i ended up doing is passing though a USB 3.0 pcix1 card to the vm and it worked. I tried every combination of passthough i could with the onboard controllers
