I currently own a Dell 2707WFP that I have been happy with for last 3 years. My Dell is a S-PVA panel with 1920x1200 native res, .303 mm pixel pitch, 6ms gtg.

I am itching to upgrade to an IPS display for overall better color quality. I would prefer to stay at the 27" size since that is what I am used (spoiled) with now.

The issue I find on alot of nicer 27" IPS monitors is that they sport 2560x1440 native res which I do not prefer. I am not picky on 16:9 versus 16:10 format but prefer the 1920 by X resolution size.

I do a fair amount of gaming so I am very sensitive to input lag and ghosting but this seems to mostly be a thing of the past with more recent quality IPS displays.

My budget is flexible but would like to stay under $1,000 if possible

are there even any 16:10 27" monitors being made these days? i am not aware of any... pretty much all of the ones i see are 1080p TN monitors. but i would be interested to know as well.

1440p Samsung S27A950D PLS or the Apple Cinema Display are the only good options unless you go with a 1080p MVA Samsung S27A650D. The MVA panels have slower response times than the old S-PVA panels but much higher contrast. They don't make 1200p 27" any more.

I think it might be good to jump up to a 27", but the thing that worries me is a higher resolution. I can deal with 1080p on a 24" but any text small than that would be difficult for me to work with.

Would I get much out of going with the S27A650D in terms of gaming, as opposed to a Dell U2410? The screen would be larger but I'd actually be losing some pixels.

For work though and the sake of my eyes, I'm just nervous about doing 1440p on a 27".

The U2410 is one of the worst monitors you could buy for text due to the grainy matte coating. All IPS panels are made by LG and use the same grainy coating except for the Apple Cinema Display, Dell ST2220T and Eizo FS2332.

The Samsung 650D series is to slow for gaming if you are sensitive to ghosting, but will have the best picture quality. The Samsung S24A850D is 1200p, fast and lag free. There is a big thread on one of the first 2 pages on [H] about it.

I use Windows text 125% on my S27A850D and the text is fine. By default with the interwebz it was slightly to small for my tastes compared to my 23" 1080p display, but for everything else the 1440p resolution is great.

Is it even worth me upgading from my older 27" Dell 2707 then? Like I said, I dont care for the 1440p resolution as I find that everything is too small for my tastes.

I know there are several quality 24" upgrade paths but I just cant see going down in size....

I wouldnt be so dead set on IPS, other panels have come a long way. I recently switched from $800 dell IPS panels to a samsung 27" (s27a950d) and havent looked back. 120hz is the sweet spot between CRT's and LCD's and it is sweet believe you me.

Reading text isnt a problem, its plenty plenty sharp, the only problem is not being able to fit as much information vertically as I could on a 16:10 monitor. 16:10 is far superior for desktop work.
