Gateway P-6831FX Review

I only know Second Life from watching the TV show the office :p

But if it's not stressing the video card, then maybe it's not showing a problem. But if it's happening in any other game that DOES stress the video, then you may have a problem with the GPU on your laptop. I don't know what Gateway would do about it either. When I asked them about my keyboard having a problem they directed me to a different company that sold all the parts they used (at stupid prices), so I don't know what they would tell you about the GPU. You may be able to send it in, but who knows what they might charge you.

Well when loading terrain and looking in certain areas there definately is a stress on the video card. But i just reinstalled the drivers and came across a new error with running CSS. It says "failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer. What ever that means i couldnt find anything along those lines. And i guess im stuck with this laptop because i dont have any money after paying for it.

Hmm okay, I did a quick search, and there have been problems like that, but they are from like back in 2004-2006, at least what I found, so they are with much older video cards...

Do you have Service Pack 1 installed? That may help. Ooh, also, there was just an update this weekend for NVIDIA cards on Vista... it was a Vista update, but you need SP1. That may help, I don't know.

Also doing some reading on those errors, are you using a second monitor?

Try looking through these and see if you find anything that may be helpful:

No im not running a second monitor. And no SP1 is not installed. Although i found some more recent problems and i tried doing what they did to fix it but it did not work. Some people say that there was no way to fix theres. Ill research this more but if i wanted to install XP on it do i need any certain XP or is there anything special i have to do?

I would suggest updating vista to service pack 1 and then getting the rest of the updates to see if that helps

Service Pack 1 has failed me. I uninstalled my video drivers, installed SP1 then reinstalled my video drivers 174.74 with modded INF file and im still getting the nlvddmkm or what ever driver has stopped responding but has recovered thing. Im stumped.

Man.... and I'm guessing it's all updated too....

I'm stumped as well. Are you seeing artifacts? Strange graphical anomalies?

I do not think it is fully updated but about 70% of the updates are installed... There are no artifacts just blinks a couple times then flashes freezes on the screen where you go to click ok on the MOTD for CSS then blinks black again and you have to CTRL+ALT+DEL to get out of it. Other than that no artifacts or graphical animalies that i see.

is this the same laptop that was in the hard section for $800?

Well i have all of the updates for vista installed.... Still no luck... Im highly considering switching to XP on it if there are drivers available that are stable and will work for this computer. If there are let me in on what drivers and XP versions work because vista is a lost cause.:(

Here's the guide:

Drivers for additional hardware are muddled down in the comments. Also is the disclaimer that installing XP will NOT void the warranty. Some asshat in tech support gave him that info.

Hi,

I just noticed that Gateway has just released a new BIOS for their FX series of laptops, including the P-6831FX.

http://support.gateway.com/support/...zilla BIOS Update Version 94.28&uid=208752625

Has anyone installed it yet, and if so, have they noticed any performance changes, specifically w/the graphics?

I'm wondering if this BIOS incorporates a fix for the Nvidia GPU problems out there. To fix it, I would imagine that it would mean underclocking the GPU, in order for it to run cooler.

Thx.

.
