Since DC is a bit slow moving today let me tell you 2 ghetto folding stories. Feel free to share yours.

1) My uncle's mobo finally gave way and I told him to buy a new one. He got the Abit Via one and I got done installing and cleaned out a ton of dirt but the temps still was at 58C with a XP 2000+. So here is what I did. I told him since he only has 1 case fan he needs to get more airflow to keep the proc cool, telling him he might needs to get a case with more fans. He then calls me later in the day and asks if he could just purchase a fan and have it running near the case, I said better yet, open the side and blow air directly into the case. Next thing there is a 7 inch fan blowing and the proc is running at 49C Folding load with a stock aluminium HS and the little 60mm fan. :D

2) Same thing with my current 3000+, which cannot OC for shit and seems to have a problem with the VNF3-250 in displaying proper temps so my roommate suggets we get his big honking 25" fan and have it blow into the case. Problem still not solved but now my case window is a 25" fan. Great for LAN parties and the like. :p

3) Related to #1, I brought back my uncle's dead mobo and saw the busted caps and proceeded to replace it in an attempt to get another folding boxen. It POSTed after our fix but for some reason refused to boot any IDE devices. After trying everything for about 2 hours I give up and place my mobo on top of the dorm floor bin and proceed to watch T.V. 10 minutes later I walk out towards the bathroom and find that someone has taken the busted mobo. Wish I had a video of that guy trying to get it up and running. :D

Come on. Lets hear your ghetto folding stories.

If only they made 25" fans as efficient as 120mm ones. That would be some *serious* airflow.

At one point I had 4 computers in one corner of the basement running caseless on a big sheet of wood. Relatively expensive stuff, too - 3/4" oak plywood. They were all athlon 900s, on the same old motherboards, with ~256mb ram each. Then I found 3 duron 1200s, so figuring that FAH uses clock speed more than cache, I swapped 2 of them out. They all died and didn't come back when I moved the original chips back into them.

So now my goal is a lot of duallies to replace those poor athlons. I'm up to 2 p3 boxen, hopefully I can get an opteron eventually.

If I had pics of my SFF when I was running without the case and the PSU on top of the CD drive, because putting the PSU in its regular spot would cause it to overheat.

I also ran my Athlon 64 3700+ on a motherboard tray before I got a case.

BTW, I have seen magnusvir's 25" fan

I've a stack of 4 plastic crates each with a dual AMD mobo with all the other parts needed to make then run.
Sitting on top in all its naked glory is another dual mobo and bits to make a fifth boxen.
@20 Ghz in that stack.

They are cooled by two 120mm fans running in series.
That way if one fan dies then the other then gets 12v and you can hear its speeded up.

Ps. My other two boxen are in Lian-Li PC-70 cases...... :p

Luck........ :D

Pics?

that "blade" is actually a pretty good setup... minus it being hung from the ceiling (heat rises).... how did you mount the mb?

Keep on Folding!! For the [H]orde!!

One of my boxen has a bad hard drive. It's gotten to the point where it has to be kicked or slapped several times a day to get the hard drive to spin back up and then restart the machine. I guess I really should get everything copied off that drive I want to keep. Maybe I'll do that tonight.

Do not fear. The box still has one good hard drive (I think) and very soon it should be running Foldix and doing nothing else with a PIII 600.

At that point, I should have The PIII 800 running with a 40 gig hard drive and doing mostly folding under WinXP. That machine will only have the frame from the case. There are no side panels, front bezel or anything. I may have to rig up a switch to turn it on if the motherboard does not have an option to turn the machine back on when AC power is restored. Yes Peng, this is what the mobo and processor you sent me. See what you have condenmed the poor thing to a life of? :D

Power buttons? What are those... get a screwdriver!

Or a paper clip, that way they come right back on after an outage! :D

Depends on the mobo. i had something similar set up on one, and it started an elec fire

Mine are all set in the bios to restart after power failure.
Plus they are also set to auto log onto Windoze.
I get around about 1 in 25 chance of a bad checksum causing a restart from scrach.

Luck........ :D

Just put a jumper on it :D

Won't work. The motherboard gets really confused when the circuit is always closed. I really miss the good ol' AT power supplies. :(

If needed I'll probably just rig up a couple of wires that all I'll have to do is touch them together. I guess I could go looking for the bezel of an old case I had with all the switches and stuff in and leave it connected and laying around somewhere.

Too bad it doesn't have the built-in power and reset buttons on the motherboard like my DFI Lanparty. Those things kick ass.

I think I may have to have someone build me a robot that will watch over my boxen and make sure they are always on when there is power. That thing is going to be expensive as I'm going to need a big ass battery to power the guy since he'll be folding too. Can anyone help me with this? :D

Sheet metal screws, with vinyl tubing spacers to cushion it off the plywood.

As cold as the basement is, that blade has nothing to fear for heat. :D

The hard drive and PSU are held on with nylon zip ties, threaded through 14ga plastic wire staples. Ghetto as it can get...

A shot of it when it was under what passed for construction:
