OK... This is for my brother. He's come to me asking about upgrading his processor but keeping his motherboard.

He's running a Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 with a Windsor 5200+, DDR2-800 and two 8800GTs in SLI.

He wants to upgrade his chip and RAM and OC it, but he asked me about it to be sure the motherboard will actually support whatever chip he gets. I told him to go with the 955 BE and some G.Skill DDR2-1066. However, the Gigabyte support site lists Phenom IIs as being supported but doesn't list the 955 specifically. I assume this is just due to a long cycle of updating the site, but who knows.

So... What say you, [H]? Can he pop in a 955?

there are three versions of that board.. here are the support lists for each version:
v1.0 http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/CPUSupport_Model.aspx?ProductID=2287
v1.1 http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/CPUSupport_Model.aspx?ProductID=2383
v2.0 http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/CPUSupport_Model.aspx?ProductID=2539

versions 1 and 1.1 do not show support for the phenom II am3 cpu's but version 2 does.. so make sure he looks on the board what version it is..

but all 3 support the phenom II 940.. but he will be losing performance since it does not support HT3.0 and thus all am2+ processors will be running at HT1.0 (2000mhz) instead of the rated HT speed they are suppose to run..

his board is only an am2 socket with the bios updated to support am2+ processors.. he should probably invest in getting a new board.. maybe wait a little longer to get the funds to do it.. it will be more cost effective down the road to upgrade the board now then later..
