I'm considering getting 1 or 2 9800 GX2s.

I may be getting a new mobo (asking about in another thread).

With a Intel E8500 CPU (3.16Ghz).

I would like a power supply that for sure can handle 2 9800 GX2s, even if I buy one now and one later. I'm also thinking of later upgrading my hard drive to a few of those fast Raptor drives in a raid config. As well as an all-in-one sata BlueRay/DVD/CD read/write +/- blah blah drive.

What's a good PSU that will allow me to upgrade to all this later on and that will (hopefully) not make a lot of noise and has a decent warranty?

Am I looking at one of those 1000 watt $300 PSUs or can I make it with something less? Mind you I don't want to skimp on a PSU *IF* it means that it could cause my whole system to be blown out.

Thanks for any help and/or review links!

i wouldnt go with less than a 1kw for 2x 8800gtx's in sli, but thats personal preference. i couldnt find any info on what a 9800gx2 draws

I just opened my system as I forgot what I had. I currently have an Antec TruePower Trio 650
http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=23650

This should be enough if I go with 1 9800GX2, but do you think it's enough if I decide to go for 2 9800GX2s?

If not, I'm a fan of Antec power supplies as they've always been good for me.

Can somebody help me choose one that will give me enough power, but also one that I'm not paying for overkill?

This is what I have seen on power draw if you haven't seen them yet:

In either one you are looking at 600w at least for video cards.

That 1000w power supply is not lookings like such overkill anymore.

good find there

whatever wattage psu you choose, just remember that you need to draw no more than 80% of the psu's output, otherwise you will stress the psu unnecessarily. thats why i recommended a 1kw, just to be on the safe side. your system will most likely draw about 300w, and a single gx2 under load draws 430w, while 2X gx2's draw 660w. a single gx2 in your system draws about 750w, which is right at 80% of a 1kw psu. two gx2's in your system will draw 950w, which would require a 1.2kw psu. these cards are hard core, if you are going to invest in them, make sure that you have adequate juice

I've seen some 1000 watt power supplies that are longer than normal ones. I'm looking at this Antec 1000 watt power supply: http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=27100#

Are its dimensions of a regular sized power supply? I ask because I have an Antec case: http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=81800 and it has limited power supply space: http://www.dumpt.com/img/viewer.php?file=lriyc58qmj19y9shjojl.jpg

So I need to know if I'm going to be able to fit a 1000 watt power supply in my case, because I am really not up to upgrading my case to, I like it to much.

EDIT: NM I found out that Antec 1000 watt is too long for my case.

i have the coolermaster real power pro 1kw and it is standard psu dimensions, it will fit inside a standard case. just beware of the really long cables
