I am currently using a Radeon Sapphire 9600 in my rig for gaming. Obviously that isn't enough anymore, with all the new games coming out. I am looking to upgrade to another card that will play the newer games (Far Cry, Doom 3, Battlefield 2). It doesn't have to be the absolute BEST card out there, just something to handle those games I listed above in decent resolutions. I also recently upgraded to the Dell 2005FPW monitor, so I would really like to play these games in widescreen. It's not a definite, but it would be nice.

Thanks.

well there is the 6800 standard which is basically a 6800 GT with 12 pipelines and a lower core and memory clock. It probably can run todays games at widescreen resolutions but lacks the power to run those resolutions with AA enabled.

Then theres the 6800GT. It really is the best bang for buck card. Able to run todays games at widescreen resolutions and with AA enabled.

The 6800GT will have a longer lifespan than the regular 6800 due to its more powerfull core and memory clocks. Plus it has 16pipelines compared to the 6800's 12.

It all depends on your price range.

The 6800GT seems really nice. It's not painfully expensive. Hmm... I still have to buy the 20-inch ACD for my PowerBook, though. But this card has dual-DVI doesn't it? I could dual monitor my PC.

I hate money, yet I love it so much. :(

I could always sell my Sapphire 9600, but probably wouldn't get that much for it.

*checks eBay*

I know for me it would be a toss up between the X700 Pro or higher, or 9800 Pro or higher or 6600 GT or higher.

\EDIT: But if I was to go cheaper, I would go either 9550 or 9600 Pro because the Geforce 5 line didn't have good picture quality. I currently have a Ti4200 which one day will have to be replaced. BTW, if you do find one still new, it may not be worth it to buy the PNY Ti4200 because of comments I read on this board.

I suggest these cards:

The X800XL

The 6800GT

And for performance... there's hardly any difference between the two.

Good luck hunting.

I agree. The 6800GT and the X800XL are good rivals for the horsepower arena they are in. They also match up well with today's normalized processor (AMD64 3200+ or so). I'm just waiting for some nVidiot to bring up SM3.0/FP32/HDR

I went from an old Radeon 8500 to a vanilla 6800 and i love it, i paid twice that when i purchased mine buy yea, a 6800 is the best bang for the buck.

OMG...BUT WHAT ABOUT SM3.0, FP32, AND HDR

Just kidding :D

Does anybody know when a cheaper 78xx card from nvidia will come out? If its only about a month or so maybe it'll be worth waiting for that.

I think I want the 6800GT. I really want to play those games at max settings on my 2005FPW. That would just look AWESOME. I'm short on money right now... quick off-topic question for ya guys, I need your suggestions: would you rather save up $700 for an Apple 20-inch Cinema Display for use on a PowerBook or just purchase another 2005FPW for cheap and use the extra cash on the card. I really want the Apple display to match my PowerBook and for the built-in FireWire hub, but I don't know if its worth the extra money.

Ah, so many decisions!

I'd go for the card...but that's my knee-jerk reaction- not much of an Apple guy.

I really do love Apple, but they're products are so over-priced most of the time. I have to think about this...
