GTX 480 Owners Thread

You need TWO of them to get triple monitor support to work with Nvidia cards. That's the main ripoff. I don't see why it would be so hard to implement on one card... ATI did it.

Eh, I'd say that while it's "cool" to have 3-display gaming, the marketshare of people that actually use it is probably under 1%... would it be "nice" to have on there with 1 GPU, sure, but then again you really need 2 to drive high-res triple-display in any case at high settings, so it almost becomes a moot point. It's not a big deal to most people... you know if you want triple-display with 1 card or not before buying, so you know what you're going into in advance, not like anyone's buying the card and going "OMG why can't I do triple displays!!!!!"... :p.

right.. people who are going to build a system like that are likely ready to drop coin.. so what's another $500 video card? j/k but I agree, it's a small market right now... I just saw a few peeps in here did have two GF100s and thought they might be preparing for some 5760x1200 action... I am curious how the Nvidia flavor stacks up against eyefinity... as many know, crossfire + eyefinity is still a bit hit and miss as to weather it will work or not.. I'm wondering how well Nvidia's implementation works.. and if there are any weird vsync or stuttering issues and all of that stuff.

Yeah, my comment was directed more at vjcsmoke, not at you for wondering if anyone had done it yet (his remark about it being a "ripoff" in particular) :).

Tomorrow I will be trying it out on my triplehead at 3840x1024. Too many things to install tonight still and copying files over from another drive taking all night. Picked up one of those 80GB SSD intel drives while I was there on sale for $199. Not seeing all that much difference between it and the raptor 300gb so far. It is definitely faster but slower as well in some areas. So far the 480 is running the few games I installed like glass. About 50% faster than the 285 it replaced and I haven't even begun to oc it or my system yet.

You got drivers for this already? I thought they weren't out yet.

Heatlesssun, I've yet to see a new review using the 197.41 drivers... our results are being shown on a lot of forums: massively overclockable, and much better than review performance, it's weird. I think it's drivers making the difference here... I know some review sites had higher results than others, but it seems too widespread a difference to be anomalies. My Dirt 2 was performing really badly at first, reinstalled the drivers and it skyrocketed, might need to run driver cleaner I'm thinking myself but it appears to be performing quite well so far :D. Other games are performing much better than reviews, for me though... my OC'd GTX 470 appears pretty darn competitive if not faster than many of the 5870 oc'd #'s I've seen, across the board.

I started a thread on this because this is puzzling the hell out of me. I'm getting better way better numbers out of Dirt 2 than even the Guru3D overclock tests. I wonder it it has something to do with the i7-980x, all the tests I've found were all 4 core i7s.

i haven't really been able to get my temperatures and noise in check with this card...i knew it would run hot, but it seems as though others are getting better results. i'm heavily leaning towards picking up a $20 or $30 dollar card to run my second monitor. the heat, coupled with the fan noise while running dual monitors is going to annoy me with this card

Not sure... I am seeing really good #s from other people on various boards too. I think these cards just may be screamers...

Metro and just cause run fantastic, this card rocks. Took of a couple motherboard capacitors cramming this baby in so Im not running the computer with the current board anymore. Ill get a new mobo today and run some temp tests to see if the lian li v350 can keep this beast enclosed without overheating

P.S. the asus carbon fiber is sexy lol even if its just a sticker

Just stuck my pair into my Lan-Gear Da Box 100 Blackheart mATX case and it is a tight fit to say the least. Just idling in Windows my machine blue-screens with the cover on from the cards overheating my chipset.

With the cover off though I can actually play games, we'll see what I can do to change that though.

About twice the frame rate as my 285 right now with my th2g at 3840x1024 in games and i am not even overclocked yet. the 285 and computer were both overclocked to get half the frame rate i am getting now with the default speeds of the 480 and the i7 920. This card owns the 285 at high rez from what i can see. on my 28" monitor at 1920x1200 its about 50% more fps than the 285. for whatever reason after reinstalling my system though i can no longer run batman aa. I click to run and the hourglass comes up and then nothing happens. I really wanted to see what this baby could do with batman and physx and the damn game wont run..

Lame :(. I don't own Batman AA (thinking of buying it sometime), myself.

Here's another result of my GTX 470 oc'd:

Really enjoying this card, it's running great! Anyone else able to try Batman AA and see if it works properly for them, or can you try it without TH2G on maybe and see if that fixes it for you?

Damn I thought one was going to be a challenge, the only way I could imagine it working is watercooling them.

You can really tell this card is packing massive horsepower and in one or two driver refreashes hopefully it will show it's true colors. It already eats everything I throw at it

NV cards can't run Metro on Very High, they have a glitch.

So Metro becnhes must be discarded until NV fixes that glitch.

This glitch? http://hardocp.com/article/2010/04/06/metro_2033_image_quality_followup/

So NVIDIA’s answer seems to be accurate. The issue affects the "Very High" Quality setting only. If you are using Analytical AA, it only affects the GeForce GTX 480 and GeForce GTX 470. If you enable 4X MSAA, it also affects the Radeon HD 5000 series video cards.

It affects HD 5000 cards as well.

Speaking of cooling...do you think it's better or worse to run with your case open (side panel off)? I haven't had my side panel on for a long time because the Noctua HS/fan I have on my core i7 is too big too close the door on it.

As long as you have side fans and good air flow it should be fine. My temps aren't really different with the side off or on.

is anyone else pissed at the mini hdmi slot as opposed to a reg hdmi. My 5870 had 2 normal ones, and nvidia only saw fit to put a mini hdmi forcing me to buy an adapter. Not a major issue, but annoying

I have 2x Asus GTX 480 and I have a 3 year warranty on mine. No biggie, I don't keep video cards that long and they go by serial number so whoever I sell them to in a year or so will still have warranty. Win-win I say.

Can you take some pictures of how much space it is between the cards with that mobo?
Or measure with a ruler. Though pic would be best.
Because i have that mobo and i want to know how much space there will be between the cards.
That would help me ALOT.
And also, what is your load temps (in games)?

My load temps in games run in the mid 80s to low 90s depending on the game and that's with the overclock (check sig) I'm running.

Here's a shot of my rig.

I'll be putting my second 480 right next to the first. I've got a side fan that I'll crank to high and I have a slot fan that will go under the second 480. Actually what's intresting in the install guide from eVGA they don't mention not having two 480s side-by-side with no space though in their illustrations they show spacing two cards but when they show three cards they are all packed together. Indeed the nVidia Thermaltake case puts a hood on the cards while they are all packed together. At any rate this is just a temporary solution until I get a new case and Rampage III Extreme motherboard.

Ok thanks.
Wow pretty low temps, but how fast does the fans spin? Is it unbarably loud or just loud? :p (i know it's loud because only 1 480 is loud). I get 91c in GTAIV with only 1 480.. i have a Antec 1200 case.

The space between the cards looks fine.
Your post probably made me buy a second 480 :p hehe, but not just right now.

DooKey: Aren't the H50 coolers suppose to run cooler with the pump "upside-down"?

Got mine on Tuesday and replaced the old 9800GTX:

Thought these bad boys were going to be the parts that was going to hold up my new build, but turns out I'm waiting on my motherboard and CPU before I get to test these guys out.

nice builds to hetsaw and dookey. what is the load temp on your 980x dookey ?

My 980x runs 80C +/- 2C with all 12 threads at 100%. When gaming it stays in the high 60s to low 70s.

Not sure what you mean by upside down. My H50 is installed in the same position that Corsair uses in their how-to video at the Corsair website.
