I read that Linksys hack for those certain routers. I was planning on getting the silver Linksys router with RangeBooster, as well as a RangeBooster wireless card, but that would cost over 130$. With this hack, you can get the same + more for 60$ (the cost of the router).

Now, has anyone tried this and has seen drastic improvement? When I'm sitting in my room, my laptop always says Low or Very Low signal strength. If I get this router hack (after I buy the WRT54G router) and use it, can I get that signal strength to Excellent or at least Very Good?
 
Yeah the DDwrt firmware can improve it a lot from boosting my xmit power I went from verylow/low to good.

DDwrt doenst make it a 600 dollar router though lol

Depending on which hardware version of the WRT54G you get flashing the firmware can vary.
 
I don't know about "hacked" firmware, but there are some third party firmwares such as DD-WRT or Hyper-WRT allow you to crank up the output on some routers. It's better than stock, from my experience not as strong as some of the better Pre-N/MIMO routers out there though.

Good question, My 2.0 does better than stonecat's 1.x for speed tests with Comcast's powerboost, but I dont knwo the hardware on teh other versions, goes up to like 5 or 6, if your buying it in a store all your gonna get is probaby the latest.

They all run the DD WRT.
