I have a Dell Latitude E6420 (work laptop) which has HDMI out. Video works fine but the driver dosen't seem to support audio output over HDMI. I've checked the Playback Devices (showing Disabled Devices too), but nothing relating to HDMI or HD Audio, just the normal on-board audio.

The laptop uses nVidia Optimus with a NVS 4200M.

So I'm wondering if there is any way to emulate HDMI audio or otherwise force it to work. Or am I totally screwed out of audio over HDMI?

Are you using the nVidia drivers? According to the spec sheet for the NVS you should have 7.1 LPCM support over HDMI.

On my system the video feed has to be activated in order for the audio device to show as enabled. I do this by setting the HDMI out to mirror the primary display.
