I currently have a AMD 4400+ but my rig is acting up and I need one to replace it. I'm nt sure if I'm goign to go with quad or dual just yet but was wondering what are the best bang for buck chips available right now? Are people still sticking with ddr2 or have they moved over to ddr3? What are the best mobo's availabel for the intel chips these days? Thanks

If you go dual, the best bang-for-the-buck chips are probably the E7200 ($120), E8400 ($165), and E8500 ($185). In terms of Quad-Core, you probably should consider the Q6600 which is around $180-190 these days.

DDR3 isn't mainstream yet and DDR2 800 should be more than enough for most computing needs.

Thanks for the help. I'm debating between a E8500 and Q9550 right now. Is the e8500 chip guaranteed to be E0 stepping?

Ok guys, this is what I have so far. Let me know if I should make any improvements or any suggestions

Q9550 or E8500 E0
Crucial 2x2GB Crucial Ballisitx DDR2-800 or G.Skill F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ
GIGABYTE EP45-UD3P

- The G.Skill RAM is a good as well as the cheaper choice
- The motherboard is a good choice.
- The CPUs are a tossup. The Q9550 is about 10 to 15% faster than the Q6600 IIRC but costs $130 more than the Q6600. If comparing similarily priced CPUs, the E8500 and Q6600 are good choice. Just depends on whether or not you want a quad-core or dual-core. Search through the Intel CPU forum for the thousands of threads on that question.

Like Danny said, do a search and decide for yourself. If you don't need a quad-core for your particular computer uses, then it would be wiser to go with the E8500 or 8400. They also run cooler than the quad-cores.

I would forget about the Ballistix (reliability issues as of late), but the rest looks good to me.
