Do you sit around goofing off all day at work, doing non-work related stuff like reading the [H]? Good, here are a bunch of ways not to get caught.

We all spend some of our time at work doing things that have nothing to do with our job. We surf the Web. We play games. Sure, we all need our downtime, and the enlightened manager knows that. But still, we'd rather just surf in private than deal with the raised eyebrows.

Well, IE8 and FF3b both have porno modes right? I'm sure they'd work just as well at work. :p

wow, none of this crap would work at a normal workplace

first off, user != admin, can't install shit, can't change settings (porn mode is only good if you turn it on)

second, everything is thru a proxy, so that's got your ass if you try anyting

maybe in a small office or something, but none of this crap would work in a setting with a real IT guy/dept.

and finally, why risk it? its not like were in a tough time or anything, I mean, its only a job, you should be doing everything you can to NOT work, right? I know shitloads that would kill for a good office job..

Well, I am pretty much the admin. I know what users do what. Its all logged by IP address, the same addresses are given to the same machines, and no one has the ability to change their IP addresses.

Also, those users that spend a lot of time on the internet, have the ability to clear/delete their history removed. Sure, you could delete it via command line, but, they don't know this, and its all still logged in the web filter.

With the web filter we use, you can not use a proxy, or, even access one.

Since port 3389 isn't monitored at all, I use it to jump to my home system to do my deeds. My desktop is also locked down at work. Any tmie I get up, I lock it. My PC is not a domain PC, and has a strong password. So, no one can accidentally it unless they are at it and I am not there,

The admins won't search though browser caches; they'll monitor web usage from the network side. So CCleaner and browser 'porno' modes won't help. You'd have to use Anonymizer or similar service to hide your tracks.

Though if you feel the need to go that far then you're probably doing something that you really shouldn't be doing.

Oh, and only like 3 people are an admin on their local machine, otherwise they are limited unless the programs they run require power user.

i just install a multi desktop software, that way i can do my surfing on one "desktop" and my work on another.....and since im the IT person i dont really have to worry about anyone tracking me :D

i just carry "Opera Tor" for browsing, "portable utorrent" for torrenting and "installed ccleaner" to clear up my temp files in my pen drive. :D

Am i the only person who thought this thread was about doing smack?

i heard that

With newer computers, there is no need to do any of this. Windows Vista has SSTP VPN built right into it, and Server 2008 makes it a breeze to set up an SSTP VPN server at your house. Also, you don't need admin privileges to make a VPN connection. Just SSL VPN into your house, and you're surfing over a 256-bit AES VPN, problem solved; it can also get through any firewall/blocking system because it tunnels through HTTPS.

Will not work if your work actually has a decent security policy.

People use Vista for business??

And this would require users to know how to install server 2008 and set up a VPN. My users can barely figure out how to Remote Desktop into their local workstation from the Conference room when I have printed instructions for them...

All those things in the article wouldn't work in my place.

Dude, portable VLC, portable Iron/FF3 Privacy mode ("*google\chome\application\chrome.exe -incognitoand") and portable CCleaner FTW! Some other apps aswell, but those are the basic 3.

I like netbooks as well, easy to hise, for a while I couldn't use my notebook at work so I used an Eeepc to play music and browse the web while no one was looking. Funny thing was I let one of the big wigs use my Eeepc (during the banned time) when they needed to find a hotel locally, they thought it was brilliant. I've always told the head security guys if they wanna protect there network they shouldn't allow smart phones or phones with high speed network access into the building. Best yet was that the computers at work are designed to block flash drives, but allow USB HDD which in my opinion is worst.

Trying to avoid network filters at work is a good way to get yourself fired.

Isn't this whole thread breaking rule 18 anyway? :p

keep your jobs people, abide by worksite laws. this is no time to discuss how to slack off at work... also, if you really need to, just use your winmo cell phone...

Great advise, remember Google is now working on cheap wireless internet access that should put 3G/4G to shame.

How do you think I'm posting this right now? We have zero IT department here at work. They tried installing this program once on some of the computers; I don't even remember the name of it...it put a little flower icon in the startup tray, and you couldn't go to some websites. It caused problems on the PC's running Windows 98 (yes, we still use PC's with 98); you could check your email one time and then after that you'd have to restart the computer. Me and another guy complained so much and our "computer guy" couldn't fix it so he removed it from ours. The other people who had it didn't get email so it didn't bother them. Recently, one of the supervisors started using one of the PC's with that program and he couldn't access nascar.com. The program requires a password to uninstall it, so I just booted into safe mode and deleted the .exe; now it can't start up when the PC is turned on.

I just use my tethered BlackBerry Storm on my personal Tablet PC. Like right now.

The one thing we will get canned for is using a cell phone on the production floor, whether it's talking, texting, or interneting. But you can use internet on a PC all day long.

i just use an encrypted vnc session over https from my work to my home

not that it really matters, the management here don't really care what we do so long as we don't get the viroos or spend all day fucking off on the net when we should be working
