Hitachi just announced the 1TB SATA to their channel partners. It's a 5 platter design, perpendicular recording, and 32MB cache. Unfortunately at full speed a drive that size will take about 2 days to fully load with data. It's currently slated to ship mid-April, so Hitachi should beat Seagate to market this time around.

It's been announced a while ago...

Also, how did you come up with the 2 day calculation??.. thats 48 hours.

That 2 day calculation must be wrong. I'm willing to bets its somewhere around 7 hours. Someone correct my math if I'm wrong...

1,000,000,000,000 BYTES
40,000,000 BYTES/SECOND (Typical SATA150 harddrive write speed)

1,000,000,000,000 / 40,000,000 = 250,000 SECONDS = 416.67 MINUTES = 6.94 HOURS

I'd say 4 hours, 40MB/sec is slow for new drives. 60MB/sec is reasonable for average, no?

I got the 40MB/s from a review comparing the speed difference between SATA150 and SATA300. They tested two Hitachi drives and their speeds were something like 45MB/s and 47MB/s respectively.
