My Hitachi 7200rpm 80gb drive is making a really annoying high pitched whine. Is there any way to dampen it? I just 5v'ed all my fans so it's a lot more noticeable now. If I can fix this my computer will be very silent

Those mainly just help with vibration. I have a WD that has a high pitched whine as well. I get headaches from it. I suspended it with rubber bands and that didn't help at all. Maybe some of those acoustic mats could help?

I am interested to know as well...

Rubbery things absorb high frequencies. You could even use stuff like dynamat/fatmat meant for car audio. Just make sure that whatever you use, the drive (and case itself, of course) are not blocked from being sufficiently cooled.

I have the firmware upgrade for that problem,
Hitachi doesn't have it on website.

I have same drive as you, (I have 4 ,and they all did it)
they call it the crying cat .
They said 6 models have the problem.
I found it .

Do you have any cooling on the drive in question? Sometimes they whine when they get too hot.
