So basically as long as it's a supported file format I can put any video from my pc onto the new ipod 5g?

Hopefully, I haven't seen anything definite about it supporting non-itms video, but if it didn't it would be a major blunder on Apple's part.

The banner ad on Apple.com says "home video" so I would have to assume so, though.

haha everyone is going to be after ways to convert like this now for the new ipod. imagine porn on ipod in shopping mall toilets while you get horny as your mom is shopping for lingerie !

Encoding in H.264 takes forever and is far from the optimal format. :/

huh? x.264 encodes are the best i've ever seen (just watched a bunch. dvd resolution nero avc in matroska container) the hd ones use a quarter the resourses wmv hd clips use too. would look even better if my card had better overscan correction for the dvi. maybe for apples it still sucks though :S

it is slow as hell to encode but H.264 looks just incredible...posted some pics way back when from it and all I could say is wow...now if I decide to get one I will have to do some encoding at work on my dual 1.42 :D

Yes, great quality at the cost of huge file size. I encoded a 4meg file and it grew to 10meg. Encoding a movie from 700megs grew to well over 1.5gigs. I can sacrafice some quality for half the size using xvid or divx, and not have it take days to encode..

ffmpeg -i <FILE_NAME> -f avi -vcodec h264 -b 800 -acodec mp3 -ab 128 foo.avi

if mp3 is not the right audio codec, just replace mp3 with the right one. This is how I do it in linux, and I am sure ffmpeg works the same way on a mac (terminal). How good is that ffmpegX? I have seen screenshots of it, but was not sure if it let you play with all the options ffmpeg has.

I actually think the new version of QT pro will do all the grunt work for you.

are you upscaling, increasing the bitrate, or doing something else to it?

Because I can take a 700meg xvid, and re-encode it to h.264 to nearly the same file size or less.

I never encode, so i can pretty much stfu about that. They do look good though and everything still has alot of tweaking to increase speeds. didn't know that it was soooo slow to encode. i'd give it time though. it still is pretty new and will get better.

Encoding movies with Handbrake, I resorted to using ffmpeg as it only took about the same amount of time as the movie length itself, w/o changing bit size or screen size. H.264 on the otherhand, would take hours. And yes, when encoding short clips, even at the same size and bits, it was still bigger, even if I used some old crappy video. Odd..
