How much is your main rig with all the trimmings worth?

I just sold my main rig for $1200 (included an hour of my time to transfer the guy's data to it).

Shuttle SN25P
4200+ X2 @ 2.6ghz
2x1mb Corsair XMS

1x 74gb Raptor
1x 320gb Seagate 7200.10

Win XP Pro

made some money there huh?

that 6k machine is everybody's dream I think. If I had money to spare, I'd spring for 10k drives and another 8800gtx.

Yeah, especially with $2400 worth of monitors, it's funny where the distribution of expensive parts varies amongst different people...

(Two 20" LCDs + old 17" LCD + Optoma projector.)

About $2140 on my secondary system.

And god knows what on my accessories, other items, etc.

I spent about $3500 including monitor and printer when I bought my rig in May. It lost about ~$350 in value since then, see sig :)

Here's what I could find with today's prices...

A64 3200+ "Winny" = $62 --> That's for the Venice core...I couldn't find a Winny anywhere either.
XFX 6800 GT = $125 --> Again, I couldn't find one so I priced a XFX 6800 XT
1GB Kit Corsair XMS = $133 --> I actually found this one.... :cool:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 200 GB SATA = $75 --> This is the price for the .10 version.

NEC 3500a = $30 --> Priced the upgraded version, the 3550a
Logitech MX700 combo = $45?? --> couldn't find on Newegg or ZZF.

(this is too everyone)

I'm a structural engineer.

I also write my own software, and hot hardware at home let's me make runs while I'm not home- productivity pays.

If I save a client 2-5% in reinforcing steel by spending a month setting up an optimization run,- that sounds pretty nominal- until you start working on a 10-20 million square foot job (current one is over 18 million square feet). My software applies to 4 million square feet at the moment- or about 7 million pounds of steel +/- - that works out to about $500,000 in material for about 20G in billable time- and the way my company tracks time...

Bottom line is you can't get that close without an automated optimization algorithm. In order to get a job out on time and on budget, you have to make simplifying assumptions, and can't get it gnatt's ass. To save 500G, an executive architect should be willing to spend 50 or 75 grand. And I made it happen, solo..

They don't sell the software I write- and I fully intend on keeping it to myself. Although it takes alot of horsepower to run, it produces serious results.

Someone once said- complexity breeds job security.

So that's why I'll spend 20G on a machine at home- job security. Once you hit a big job right on- the next one is right around the corner..
