I have the VMware vSphere Hypervisor 5 free license. vSphere Hypervisor 5 is free.

I have it registered on computer 1.

I have computer 2 that I want to use as a backup incase computer 1 goes down.

The computer 2 evaluation period has expired (no key was required when installing ESX) and it is asking for a license.

Anyone know if I can simply copy and paste the license that computer 1 is using into computer 2 to register computer 2 as well or will that do some crazy thing to computer 1 (such as disable features of computer 1).

In other words: is the free vSphere 5 hypervisor license a one time use only license or can I use the license on multiple computers?

You can use it multiple times. When you applied for it you can set the number of servers desires to install it on. They key does not change though based on the number of servers.

I think I read in the past that the key is good for three physical hosts; but can't find the reference right now

If you are planning on using vMotion to migrate VMs from one host to another it does not support the free ESXi hosts.
