Presently I have three items downloading on Steam. Two are game updates, which I've put on pause. I can't figure out what the third download is though?

There are four tabs: Games, Media, Tools, and Downloads.

There's nothing being downloaded according to the information under these tabs. I'm on a very slow connection, so I like to know what I'm downloading. If it's not something vital, then I stop it.

What am I missing?

Perhaps it's downloading a client update? There's been a few of those recently, and they don't show on the download tab.

This. They tend not to be very large, so it's probably best to just let it finish downloading. Even on a slow connection, it shouldn't take more than a couple minutes.

If it does show a game update being downloaded it is a client update.

Steam informed me that three downloads were in progress, but only Alien Breed and King Arthur were being updated.

I paused both, and the third update just continued, but Steam wouldn't inform me what it was - it was too large to be a client update. I finally decided to uninstall Alien Breed, the update for which was over 400 megabytes. As soon as I uninstalled that program, the download stopped, and Steam informed me that only King Arthur needed to be updated.

Weird.

It might have been installing/updated the SDK/dedicated server files for Alien Swarm.

Are you sure it didn't say "sync"? My AS game does that.

It's a rootkit / trojan / DRM / virus / hacks / backdoor / information stealer / hard drive scanner / Activision / Bobby Kotick / Far Cry 2 / trap / PhysX drivers / securom / starforce / kiddy porn.

it was a game quality download service telling you to install better games then King Arthur and Alien Breed

You've looked through your entire installed library of games and their update history?
