I do alot of polishing at work, brass mainly. Anyway I lapped the copper base of my Volcano 7.

As stock it was weird, tons of fine rings around it from when it was originally machined. I started with 300 grit to get rid of a few scratches I made getting the thermal pad off, then 500, 600, 1000, 1200 and finished off with quite a bit of Brasso.

I lost a good 5/6 Degrees!!! :D

Oh yeah and if I replace it I have a coppery coloured mirror ;)

What sort of thermal paste are you using and how long has it been running? All this talk about lapping is starting to convince me I should do it myself...

Cheap antec thermal grease. Its been on 5 hours with a new application of the grease (maybe a bit too much), 41 idle 46 load. Was something like 46 idle 52/3 load.

Its definately worth doing

it would be hard to ruin ia lapping job unless you sat there for an hour with 30 grit sandpaper and had a go on the heatsink
