My iBook G4 only has a cd-rom drive (refurbished), and I have the iLife '05 install DVD.

-I have tried installing from my PC (have now other macs) over the network, but it says "Install Failed" every time just before it finishes.
-I tried copying the info from the cd over the network, but halfway through I get permission errors.
-Is it possible to do this over the network maybe by making an image and sending that through the network?

Side question: Are any external drives (not enclosures) mac compatible?

why not make an ISO of the install DVD, and copy it to your mac and install it that way?

almost any external drives are mac compatible...

will there be any problems transferring platforms?

An ISO is a complete image of the disc, Mac or PC or whatever; it's compatible on all platforms from then on. An ISO made on a PC can be transfered and even burned on a Mac and will still work in the PC, and vice versa.
