Instlalled Ubuntu, can't get to the partition select screen

what do you mean? cant get to the partition select screen?

is Ubuntu installed like you said?
did you go the Wubi method (install in-part in windows) or to its own partition
Does it boot?

Sorry a bit more infomation is needed

It got it's own partition. I know that my windows install is still there, but I can't get to the screen where I select which partition to boot.

right so basically it just boots into Ubuntu and no option for Windows right?

Did you skip/ignore/miss the part of the installation where ubuntu give you the option about grub and other operating systems? would of been towards the end of the install

its easy to fix but a Harddrive layout is needed (so /boot/grub/menu.lst can be edited)
could you post:

Code:
sudo fdisk -l

sudo cat /boot/grub/menu.lst

Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x1578dd8e

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda2 * 1 30400 244187968+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sda5 22947 30400 59874223+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda6 1 22946 184313650+ 83 Linux

Partition table entries are not in disk order

in your menu.lst file, you have the option selected to hide the grub menu, and the timeout set for 3 seconds. Look for the section:

Code:
## hiddenmenu
# Hides the menu by default (press ESC to see the menu)
hiddenmenu
and comment out the hiddenmenu line. This is what is keeping you from seeing the menu. It would also help to increase the timeout so you get a chance to change your selection before it boots the default. Look for this section:

Code:
## timeout sec
# Set a timeout, in SEC seconds, before automatically booting the default entry
# (normally the first entry defined).
timeout 3
and bump up that 3.

It is a known issue with your motherboard, because it does not suppose AHCI. This simple fix I used (check sig, same motherboard) is adding "all_generic_ide" to the end of the command line from the boot select menu (when you boot from the disc).

You should be fine after that.
