Is the Dell 2407WFP Rev A04 good for PS3 gaming?

I've heard people say it's good for PS3 gaming, as it can do 1080p over DVI and has 1:1 pixel mapping etc.

But most games are in up to 720p/1080i, and some are even 720p only or 1080i only.

So seeing as the Dell cannot do 1080i over DVi, some games are going to be 720p stretched to 1920x1200. Wouldn't this look a bit crap?

Has anyone had personal PS3 720p gaming experiences on this Dell? What do you think?
Any photos/videos of it running would be great...!

Thanks so much.

No, because 720p and 1080p in the A04 revision can be scaled to 16:9. I have the A02 and have called for a replacement in order to get an A04 revision monitor. You can play games at 720p but blu-ray will be downscaled to 480p if you set the PS3 to 720p. If you set it to 1080p then you can watch blu-ray movies and play games.

But how good or bad is 720p stretched/scaled to 16:9?

big_kel, thanks, but I dont think you understand my question.

I am not talking about setting the PS3 to 720p, I am talking about games that are programmed in 720p and cant go any higher.

I thought I had posted this already but I have a PS3 and Dell 2407 A04.

720P games will play just fine in any mode, 1:1, fill, aspect.

720p looks really good when the wide mode is set to 4:3 (i.e. aspect scaling).

EDIT: It will keep that scaling option when it flashes between 480p, 720p, and 1080p SO 1080p will be scaled to 16:9.

I understand they will play fine, but will they look fine?

Surely 720p stretched to 1920x1200 pixels would lose a lot of image quality and look bad, no?

I dont want to play 720p in 1:1 because it would be a small image in the middle of the screen like this..

Who wants to play a game like that??!!

Can anyone show a picture of 720p stretched to FULL screen?

I will take a screenshot for you later tonight.
I think you are confusing resolution with aspect ratio.

If you set the input display to aspect ratio it will keep that 16:9 so it will not look stretched.
And trust me there is little difference between 16:10 and 16:9.

Do you currently have this monitor? If so, then download a 720P trailer from apple and watch it in full screen. That will be the same effect and it is called scaling.

I remember posting my setup using a snapshot from demo trailer movie so here it is.
This is a 1080P movie in fill mode and as you can there is no noticeable stretching.

I'm lookin at buyin this too. I was gonna use it for....

DVI - PS3 at 1080p
VGA - 360 at 1080p
Component - HD cable box at 720p/1080i (Whichever one works better)

So am I to beleive that these things will work right on this bad boy?

Yes will work fine.

Hi big_kel,

How did you get Dell to honor that? How long have you had the A02? I've had my A02 since october, and it sucks with no 1:1 pixel mapping. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I dont really understand, what is aspect mode?

If there is a 720p signal, will aspect stretch it to 1920x1080 pixels (16:9)?

Can 720p not be stretched to full screen (1920x1200)? If so, would it look bad?

Aspect means it keeps the 16:9 ratio as opposed to fill which streches it to 16:10.
However the stretch is so minimal you won't notice it. Scaling is the more accurate term when we're talking about displaying 720P on a 1080P monitor.

Anyways here are the screen shots from Genji on PS3 on dell monitor. This game is natively 720P.

This is aspect:

This is the fill shot: (compare to one above and you'll notice there's very little stretching)

That's brilliant consoleboi, thanks so much! That's just what I wanted to see.

Dell should thank you because your post has made me decide to purchase the 2407WFP.

Regards.

Happy to oblige.

However you may wish to consider the Benq as well as IMO has better picture quality but if you can get a deal from Dell then by all means. I just wished Dell could've enabled 1080P via component..like the Benq does.

But I hear the 1:1 pixel mapping on the BenQ is a bit messed up. For example, I've heard that if displaying a 1080p (1920x1080) signal, there are slight borders on the left and right of the screen aswell as top and bottom. The borders should only be top and bottom.

Also, people talk about 'overscan' on the BenQ when 1:1 is used...? But I dont really understand about overscan.
