It there a best way to get to go about buying a dmain name?

I want to first start by saying I'm new to this stuff. But I was wondering how a knowledgeable person on the topic would go about registering a domain? Are the domain registry places all the same? Or is there a top dog in the crowd?

I would not consider myself a knowledgeable person by any means, but I was in the same boat as you as recently as 2 nights ago. I ended up buying the domain name I wanted through the web hosting site I used. It cost about $8 I think.

I always used GoDaddy. I haven't purchased any domain names in a while though, so there may be better options now.

I have used Network Solutions (Verisign), Register.com, GoDaddy, 1&1.

I find they are all pretty good. For my personal use I have gone with 1&1. i find them to be fine. They are pretty cheap too. Network Solutions and Register.com is a little more expensive. Though, like I said i found 1&1 to be ok.
