I am helping a relative who formatted, installed XP (probably SP1 original CD) and she is having issues getting the network to install.

The motherboard is an Asus A8S-X SE which apparently is like an oem board or non-retail board because Asus's website does not have an "SE" version for driver download.

When she downloaded and installed the A8S-X (non-se) network adapter drivers from Asus's website it won't install. After googling around for a few minutes i've found others that have the SE version that also confirm that the non-se network drivers don't work for XP.

My question is how do I find this driver? Can I somehow look up the manufacturer part through some software to try to find the actual network adapter manufacturer driver?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Look on the board itself and see if you can find the network adapter chip. If you can find the part number on the chip itself, it should be trivial to find the driver for it.... should. :D

Q9: Why don't I find RTL8201x driver on the website?

RTL8201, RTL8201BL, RTL8201CL, RTL8201CP, RTL8201N and RTL8211B(L) are all PHYceiver. That is a driverless hardware device. Software driver are relative to Network controller ( MAC ) which is integrated into chipset in such case mostly. Please contact your mother board maker or chipset manufacturer to obtain proper driver support.

All i see are driver ad sites. No sign of a driver. Good luck, it may be easier to find a spare pci card than the driver for this one.

Think I got it...

That board is based on an SIS (756 NB and 965L SB) chipset. Check on SIS's website for the SiS900&Integrated SiS LAN :

http://w3.sis.com/download/

(Select WindowsXP -> Network Driver -> SiS900&Integrated SiS LAN

I have a feeling that these drivers will work.

(BTW, the release notes explicitly say that they're for the southbridge chip on your board (965L),

Heading over there now to do this. .... will comment momentarily.

Youre gonna end up spending more in gas than just buying a $5 10/100 PCI NIC and dropping it in there

i would really think that sis driver posted should work, do you know how to do the "have disk" ini driver installation method?

edit: sorry, i meant "have disk" inf* driver installation

Did you run the setup file within the zip file or did you try to install the driver using the "have disk" method?

Use something like Everest and get the information off of there and google the driver. Pretty much guarantee that will work. I use it all the time for hard to find junk like that.

EDIT: It's called AIDA64 now.

Awesome utility. It told me it was a SIS 190 whereas the driver previously downloaded was for 900 series. I downloaded the 190 series and it worked!

Thanks everyone.

Hey I was pretty close (figured it was an SiS controller). :D Glad it's working now though; that utility is a great find!
