Linux is for communists...no, really, I'm not kidding. :D Thanks to Steven P. for the heads up.

Russia has taken another step towards the transition into complete usage of free software. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Monday signed an order for the transition of federal bodies and agencies to use free software. This comes after the 2008 campaign to rid schools of all paid proprietary software and encourage free software.

Hmm. Came in to this thread expecting some sort of Steve Ballmer quote.

I think this has more to do with the fact that Russia can't afford the software or to control piracy, so they are just waving a white flag.

Another way to look at it, is that they're expressing their freedom. Free software. Free to alter it. Free to exchange.

Open Source = freedom. Couldn't be any more American then that. Anyone who disagrees is a stinking commie.

Yea right because Vladimir Putin and the current Russian neo-fascist government are so into freedom.

You missed this part of the article.

Amid these developments, Microsoft on Tuesday vowed to provide free software and legal assistance to activist groups in Russia and 11 other countries. This came after mounting pressure from rights groups, which alleged that the Redmond software giant was part of Russia's use of anti-piracy laws to quell dissent. As per reports, authorities have repeatedly seized the computers of activists and journalists critical of the government, in the name of the anti-piracy laws, to search for pirated Microsoft software.

ok fyi guys but russia is not communist anymore

+1

Everyone should be happy. Russia is finally fighting piracy. Think of how much better off MS will be since they won't have billions stolen from them by Russian pirates. ;)

China is also working on switching to Linux.

Communism is an organizational ideology. Just as terrorism and fascism. It's funny though that in our America, they've all been associated to images and used as propaganda tools.

Just another way we'll win over the Russians as they are forced to use inefficient stuff and we chose what's best for our needs.

Russia is no longer a communist state but according to wikileaks Russia is a criminal state. That means Linux is for criminals. It's also for people with a fetish for bad drivers.

Actually terrorism is a tactic. That's why a "war" against it is retarded. It's like waging a war against the flanking maneuver or a war against the high speed yoyo.

You have no idea how many times I've been profiled, pulled over, and cavity searched due to high speed yoyo paranoia. Fucking populists.

Yeah, not sure why they are pushing away from proprietary software when they don't pay for it in the first place. Putin probably got mad at something MS said or did (or didn't do).

On second thought... with all the malware sites there, maybe going linux is their way of avoiding the garbage. (for a limited time of course)

Stalin would be pleased to through off the shackles of the capitalists!

He would not be pleased to learn that you don't know the difference between "throw" and "through." You throw off shackles, so you don't get blood on them when Stalin executes you. You drive through the country on the way to the Siberian gulag.

GULag is the acronym.

Luckily, by his Stalin-era contemporaries, Putin would seem a saint. We may not see him that way, but I'm sure it is a step up from 50's era Russia.

blame a common typo and in the inability to edit front page posts.

I am well aware of the difference between throwing something and going through something.
