This is my first attempt into the wireless world and wanted to see if this was normal.

The mouse will not work on a desk or on my keyboard tray. It will not work on my old mousepad - well, it will but only moves a few inches on the screen as I'm slinging the mouse across over and over. I tried some poster board cut out that I made to see if it would work on an all white glossy surface - that didn't work.

What I finally found works is a light grey pillow case and my jeans or pants.

What the hell....

It has to do with the coloring of the surface, I understand that.

Um... Not sure if I should blow $20 or more to get a mousepad on newegg or if it will arrive in the mail and my mouse won't work on it.

I've not used that mouse before but what you describe is definitely not normal. Usually laser mice will work on most surfaces except glass. Is the sensor on the bottom clean and unobstructed? Other than that I can't think of any other remedial actions that it would be worth it for you to take except to return it..
