I'm pretty sure I want a asus or a HP, though id be willing to explore some other options

Im also pretty sure I want a i5 processor, medium sized screen (14-16 inches), and since I'm a student portability is important

I don't do too much gaming, but i would still like to occasionally play games at medium-high resolutions.

Ideally id like the price to be more around 800 -900 dollars, 1000 would be pushing it

Because it does not exist. If you want the best bang for your buck, look at MSI's 15 inch with a I5 and a 5850 mobile card and a wsxga+ screen

I like the HPs as well

This MSI one - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...52207&cm_re=msi_laptop-_-34-152-207-_-Product

I do like it, the main thing im concerned about is the battery life though as well as the poor keyboard construction.

Like i said, im not specifically looking for a "gaming" laptop, mainly due to battery life

I got the Beats edition cause I like the color. The beats also come with Dr. Dre headphones. Otherwise they are the same.

I can play SC2 and WoW on it just fine on mid-high settings. Battery life is about 4:30 hours with wifi on.

I like the beats edition

How glossy is the screen though? I dont want something thats going to have horrible reflections off of it. Also the resolution seems to be low to me

As the above poster pointed out, the screen seems to be lacking, which is a pretty important factory for me

Resolution is low but its not that bad since the screen is only 14.5in compared to 16in (which is a huge difference). The screen is glossy but Ive only used it indoor for the majority of the time and its not noticeable. Havent went outside in sunlight with it at all yet.

They used to have a 1600x900 screen but the manufacturer went out of business. Theres no estimated time for its comeback or if it will come back at all.

There is a seperate add on battery that is super thin to attach to the base of the laptop for extra juice which I ordered and should be here on wednesday. Reported battery life with that is about 9 hours.

Are you sure you want a laptop? A desktop at the same price would be 3 times faster...

He said hes a student which means hes going to be taking it to class for notes. That is also the reason why I got mine... for class. I have a desktop at home just for gaming.

I don't think your computer exists. You want more than 720p, medium to high settings on games, with decent battery life (I assume decent means 5+ hours) and under $900 (correct me if any of these are wrong, I'm just going off of what you've said).

I suggest just taking a hit in the resolution department, at this screen size it really isn't that bad. If you can do that, you open yourself up to a whole lot of possibilities.

That's my favorite of what's in your price and specs range. I guess it depends on what games you want to run at med to high. Source games run at med-high at native res on some 210m equipped machines, hell my ion 2 could push them at medium (and that's with an atom backing it up).

If you need the space, but can sacrifice the games newegg comes up with this:

The Quadro NVS 2100m is essentially a 210m, but business oriented it averages at ~3200 in 3Dmark06. For comparison, the 5650 hits ~6800 (numbers from notebookcheck.com) and when I tested my 1215N yesterday it hit 2700.

you can get a refurbed Asus G60JX or VX for $749. It's 7.5 lbs plus adapter, but will definitely satisfy the other needs you mentioned above, and is the most power in that price range until you get to $1000

Dell studio 14 has a $599 deal right now for i5, 6gb ram and ATI 550v
