looking for new laptop..

Hi folks,

I'm looking for a new laptop my current one is an old gateway, that is really showing it's age. The battery life is terrible (like 10 minutes now), it weighs a ton, and is old, but it's been good.

So here are the things i'm looking for using it for:

1. photo editing. My wife is a photographer and lightroom/photoshop are her main tools
2. programming. i do alot of java programming for work, i'd like to bring my work where ever i go
3. some gaming.


I'm looking to spend $1500 and under... and Macs are out..

Any one got any suggestions?

Buy used. I picked up a practically new Lenovo W700 for $900 off of the local Craigslist. The 16:10 1920x1200 screen is PERFECT for coding. The 16:9 screens are not so good for it.

If you buy new, stay away from the 16:9 screens if possible. They suck for Graphics and even more for coding.

I was looking into the Dell XPS, are they any good?
 
Don't let the 16x10 vs 16x9 completely make your decision for you. Obviously a 1920x1080 16:9 screen will have more real-estate and be better for coding than a 16:10 1680x1050.

Personally I believe on a 15" laptop or smaller that any resolution >= 1600x900 is a contender.

I second a Lenovo W series, besides looking on CL its worth taking a look at Lenovo's outlet here

They currently have a few W700's that fall into your price point.
