Noob looking to upgrade, well im not actually a noob,I just dont post alot

so im lookin to upgrade my 2.4 533 intel system....The new system will be used for "light" gaming, web design,surfing...But I do want to hit 4ghz OC on it..My budget is $1000 the less the better and it must be intel..I already have a case and PSU...I am worried about the memory and video card...Are they good enough for my system....Let me know...

here is what I have so far

CPU Intel Pentium® 4 640 Processor Prescott 3.2GHz $215.50 http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80824
Motherboard ASUS P5AD2-E Premium $214.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...6&ATT=Motherboards+Intel&CMP=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r
Memory GeIL DDR 2 Series 2GB $168.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820144336
Video Card Asus Extreme AX800XL $279.00 http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=324539
HSF Thermaltake CL-P0024 Combo Cool DIY Series Tower112 $42.99 http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=370491

TOTAL= $918

For an Intel rig that looks pretty sweet. But I'd go with a different video card, probably either a 6800GT or an X800XL. That's one heck of an overclock you're planning..but good luck with it. :) And just out of curiosity, what kind of PSU do you have?

Im going to use an Ultra X-Connect 500W PSU...It was a gift ,so i decided to keep it for this system...I heard good and bad things about this PSU but I will try it..Will thing PSU being enough for my new rig?

yea, I thought the same thing about the 6600...it just wasnt up to par with the system...So Im gonna get this one for $100 more...

I still need input on the memory guys....I do want 2Gigs though :D

so is the X800XL a good enough video card to go along with this rig...I want to order the parts on monday...So let me know your opinions guy/gals :p

I dont hear good things about DDR2. Dont know if they advanced at all, but supposedly they dont give you much of a performance gain over DDR

so what memory do you recommend for this motherboard/cpu then?I do want at least 2GBs.....

With that mobo he has to get DDR2. That's the only kind it accepts. :p I'm pretty sure all of the newer Intel boards require DDR2. Where did you heard bad stuff about it anyway? I always hear that it's faster than normal DDR..

Edit: And yes, the XL should be plenty good for that system.

DDR2 has negligible gains over DDR until you get up into the higher frequencies. DDR2 is cheaper than DDR sometimes aswell.

Whoop, sorry about that. I didnt look at his mobo.

And I believe I read it somewhere on theramguy.com forum. Do a search on DDR2

yea the motherboard I chose only supports DDR2...so should i stick with the GeIL DDR 2 Series memory??
