I just picked up a set of M-Audio AV40 speakers for my pc on here from a very pleasant fellow and plan on using them with my onboard audio on the MSI P55-GD80. I have been looking at add-in sound cards and am trying to make a decision.

Do I need an add-in sound card, would it be a reasonable step up in clarity?

I'm thinking of something along the lines of a Creative X-Fi Titanium or an Asus card in the same price range.

Xonar DX would be a huge upgrade for you. I couldn't imagine plugging my AV40s into onboard.

Some on board audio is actually very solid but it's very hit or miss, mostly miss, and a DX is relatively cheap.

I've heard those "solid" onboards. They are good onboards, but they really don't compare.
