I'm using the onboard audio on the M3N78-VM. I currently have the Energy Take 5 Pack 5.1 set. These are supposedly decent speakers but they are definitely not a high end audiophile setup. Right now I'm shopping for an A/V receiver to run them.

My question is: given the quality of my speakers should I go with a new receiver w/HDMI ports and take advantage of the HDMI audio or would SPDIF out to an older receiver serve me just as well? There are a lot of really nice receivers on craigslist right now but none of them are HDMI models. I'm assuming people are upgrading.

Also, I understand that this motherboard can't do lossless audio formats. Given that, what Dolby feature would be the best possible for my 5.1 set? If I go for a used SPDIF receiver I'll make sure it has this feature.

Thanks.
