What would be the most convenient or easiest to program/use external LCD screen that could be mounted on the outside of a case to report system temperatures. Also something that is cheap as possible, that does not look to fancy and it should be programmable.

Thanking you in advance.......

I saw a post on here a couple weeks ago about this, do a search for 5.25 bay ideas, and it is in there. It is an LCD screen, 6.5" I believe for about $60.

Well nevermind.. I just did a search, found the thread and the link to the screen and it is now taking me to the main page of the store, I can't find that LCD screen anywhere on their site...

I only have limited experience researching this in the internet. I haven't yet bought one because.... You either get cheap or easy. Cheap involves work. Easy involves money.

Iassume you're already familiar with Matrix Orbital by your title. Check out www.earthlcd.com

I think you'd want to check out Matrix Orbital they've been getting some great reviews lately at CNET, Toms Hardware Guide, 3DGameMan as well as winning the editors choice at GruntVille.com.

Hope that'll help

If the Palm Pilot thing mentioned in the LCD FAQ i easy enough you could probably pick up an old Palm III for liek twenty dollars or something and just leave it on the cradle at all times...or you could use it as a PDA!

I got the matrix orbital Mx6. Its amazing, has a really bright PLED screen which you can see from any angle. It even comes with the LCDC software which has plugins for Winamp, Outlook, Media Player the weather and countless more I havent had a chance to use. It also has a built in fan controller and you can buy temerature probes for it too. I paid £70 for mine from Kustompcs.co.uk. The handy thing is it comes pre-installed in a silver drive bay, but is easily removed if you wanna mount in your case. It also has internal and external usb cables. I had tried using a cheap LCD from Maplin but there really is no contest. well worth the money

lol, u really don't want to use that $4 LCD display unless u think your an expert coder... and i mean expert, I know engineers who it takes 2 weeks before they even got it to display a pixel. I'd have to say right now that if your looking for a display get the PLED from Maxtrix orbital, lol they are awsome as has been mentioned.

Matrix Orbital or Crystalfontz displays can hardly be called 'cheap' but are indeed the most convenient plug 'n play solutions.
Alternatively you can score cheap character LCD"s on e-bay and wire them up yourself and use the plethora of character LCD-apps out there to drive them.

Or you could get the Logitech G15 keyboard, that has a programmable LCD on it, and it even comes with an SDK to help you program it. That is if all you wanted was something to report temperatures and such. If you want something you can specifically mount on your case for temps then one of the Matrix or Crystalfontz displays is probably your best bet.

I'm looking for a LCD for my new system. It's a toss up between the Maxtrix Orbital, the Crystal Fontz, the VL L.I.S. 2 Premium, and the Aquaero. Any suggestion or recommendation?

I think before buying from anybody you should always do your research. Good companies always stand up to the scrutiny.

Its pretty easy but i can start you off. GruntVille reviews the LIS 2 and CrystalFontz, at http://www.gruntville.com/reviews/lcds/lis2/index.php .

I looked at the Aquaero from AquaComputers as well, there wasn't much english infomation on it, because it is a german manufacturer. It's pretty pricey, and the LCD isn't quite as good quality as you can find. However I think it's an awsome idea and i think that their company is only going to improve their product.

I'd say hold off on getting the Aquaero, for a while until they have some good US distributors, and then hopefully the price will drop.

Thanks for the link. I guess it is down to the Matrix and the Aquaero. The only reason I would choose the Aquaero is because of the water thermal probe it support. I realize you can fabricate something similar for the Matrix but I wish Matrix would have a thermal probe that I can just plug into the unit.

Hey Revlimit, there has been success using the thermal sensors in water without a problem all that you need to do is cover the sensor with a bit of epoxy and it will create a barrier around the sensor keeping the water off of the sensor, but still allow the sensor to read the temperature.

There are a few discussions involving water cooling systems that you can check out.
