Message Aging - Ability to Mark as Read vs based on idle time?

Is there a setting somewhere users can select that changes how messages are "aged" where I could mark sections as read versus based on idle time? For instance, I started reading messages, got distracted by issues at work and when I come back to my still open HardForum tab, messages that were new when I started are now marked as read probably because I was idle so long. If I could control when messages are marked as read, that'd be great. This type of thing happens often. I know.... Don't get distracted. :D

Thanks. I'll just have to make it a habit of not getting distracted when reading messages. :)
