It's been a really long time since I've done any research on displays so I thought I'd check in before making my next purchase.

I am looking to buy a new monitor (preferably IPS but PVA possible) for under $500. Ideally, $300 or under but I know there are some tempting options around $400.

Is the Dell 2209wa still king for under $300?Monitor will be used for both gaming and photo editing. No bleeding, and color and light uniformity across the screen is crucial. Wide gamut is not necessary. Moving from my NEC CRT as it finally has completely given it up.

Very difficult to say because of your price point. My 2209WA has fairly good uniformity. The U2311 I sampled had uniformity which would not be acceptable for you. I think there is the possibility that any IPS LCD ordered from Dell or HP has the potential to bring in disappointing uniformity results.

The Eizo EV2333W I use is very even and a great all-rounder, but it is priced fairly high.

Dell U2410

He said screen uniformity, not tint fest and medicore image quality due to the very poor black level.

The Dell U2311H is the best IPS panel right now in terms of image quality, it's under 300$, however the Quality Control is horrendous, be prepared to exhcange it multiple times.

The Eizo Foris FS2331 will be a bit over 500$ and is the 2010 successor to tje EV2333. The image quality on the Eizos is as good as as high end TV.
