Mozilla Ends Relationship With Google, Starts One With Yahoo

What does DustMite's statement have to do with that?

How is FF a clone of chromium? Round tabs? Some people...

Doesn't Yahoo just use Bing as their search engine anyhow?

It is unlikely this change will really affect any H readers. Most H readers probably have customized their browsers and would know how to make Google default again if it ever changed.

I'm somewhat optimistic about this. It seemed odd for Google to have been supporting FireFox after they released Chrome. You have to assume that Google would rather have everyone using Chrome instead, and I always wondered about what influence they still had at Mozilla, and if that was still influencing the browser in positive ways or not.

The main reason I like Firefox is that it's the only mainstream browser that isn't a vehicle for it's parent company and all of their ambitions. It's the only company that still seems to be making a browser based on simply making the best browser possible, and not based on what works best for the execs at Google, Apple, or Microsoft.

Yahoo still exists?

I'm just kidding, they own 15% of Alibaba, cash reserves... and the rest of the company literally has negative work. Go do the math, the rest of Yahoo is literally a liability. Maybe refocusing around being a venture capital company really is the way to go. It's not like their internet properties are worth a damn, they've run them all into the ground like a crashing jetliner.

Do you realize that Yahoo is the #1 news Website? More people go to Yahoo for their news than CNN and Fox News Combined. You don't think that's worth anything?

No I don't think a site that just links to all the garbage reporting from the major media sites is worth anything.

You don't think 175,000,000 Unique monthly visitors is good for any ad revenue? What sort of worth did you think I was talking about?

Apparently a plurality of internet users disagree with you, which makes your statement incorrect, from a financial POV.

more the whole 'drop the titlebar, move the tabs to the very top of the screen, and screw over people who use RDP but don't want the RDP bar at the top to be on autohide' idea, I assume.

I still hate how that was done.

I hate auto-hide.

The newest FF leaks more memory than the older version I was using before. This thing is shit

I've noticed the last few versions crash alot more than previous one.

Its still my default browser but i'm hoping they are getting those crash reports i'm sending.

and lol at the guy on the other page saying when the yahoo search results comeup he is going to uninstall.

You do know it will be faster to go into the options and change the default search back to google than to uninstall and switch browsers. But maybe that is too difficult for you.....

It's worth infinitely less than nothing. And thank you for explaining one of the major reasons why the American people are so pathetically uninformed. Yahoo is half entertainment news, the other half is pure AP propaganda. Like Huffpo and just about all other news sites in the U.S. these days. There is no objective journalism, just corporate shilling.

I think the confusion here is...

Firefox is older than chrome so his statement is correct.

However FF's visual style took on a chrome like appearance from what it was at a certain build number.. someone else can look it up :p

Really? If it bothers you so much, why don't you just enable the Menu bar? View > Toolbars > Menu Bar. ffs

Moizilla is OK, but yahoo really sucks. I foresee Mozilla's CEO having a child and then eradicating employees' ability to work remotely. All the while said CEO has a team of nannies to tend to his/her baby.

With that being said, I would bang Melissa Meyer in a heartbeat. And I would brag about it on Instagram.

I still use FF since it came out. First browser to invent tab browsing and they even patented it. IE, Chrome, safari, and opera only copied it but using more instances of the same exe that runs it.

When I see chrome users I ask them how many chromes does it take to get on the internet. They say one I say look at task manager and C4.

Firefox was by no means the first browser with tabbed browsing. I was using Opera with tabbed browsing and mouse gestures for a long time before I swapped to Firefox 0.7. If I'm remembering correctly I was using an old version of Opera, 2.x as I didn't like the bloat and slower response of the newer Opera versions and it was getting long in the tooth before I found and started using Firefox 0.7. The only reason I swapped was due to the tabbed browsing I was already accustomed to and an extension which had mouse gestures as I couldn't live without that either.

Firefox made tabbed browsing mainstream but it sure as hell wasn't the first with tabbed browsing.

>opera

let us bow our heads in rememberance.

the newer versions of opera are now based on chrome, hence the slowness, the inefficient ram use, etc...

such a damn shame.

Isn't the Huffpo apparently the "communist mouthpiece of the reds" or something? How are they "corporate shilling"?

Yahoo is 1/4 entertainment news, 1/4 sports (typically linking to SBNation), 1/4 news (usually AP, AFP, and Reuters), and the remaining 1/4 becomes dependent on the viewer, it might be more news but more on tech, or finance, or more local.

Finance has 70 million users/week. News 170 or 175. Anyway you look at it, Finance deserves far more than a footnote. It's the biggest finance site on the web.

Big corporations LOVE communism. They can buy all the government officials and be sure that no one able to be a threat will ever enter the market.

And Firefox is gay.

Corporations love a hyper-regulated state which invariably create a stagnant uncompetitive closed club. Shareholders are composed of a bunch of Crony capitalists who like a powerful government who can rig the game for their favor and also love paying lip service to a socialist utopia at the coffee shop or cocktail party.

Most people who know their money is ultimately ill gotten like family wealth that came from gun running or opium smuggling, or live off a trust fund, or embezzle, or have swung a monopoly, all relieve their guilt by projection. It isn't them, its the system that's corrupt. So they blame the system and not themselves. They pull to fix the 'system' and really hope they check out in life before they ruin their own personal gig.

The also have feelings of disinterest to contempt for the people who actually earn their money. They are a reminder of their ill gotten gains and its them and not the system.

Huffpo is a representative of the left the same way Eleanor Clift is a representative of the left on The McLaughlin Group. It's an extremely corporate/Pentagon/pro-Israel/etc-centric bent on nearly all reporting. The true left, which includes 85% of Earth's population outside the U.S., is either Communist or socialist, neither viewpoint is ever heard from on our media. In Reagan's corrupted vernacular a liberal is anyone who supports our government giving food stamps to starving Americans.

um... no

there was an extension for IE in like 97 that had tabs and then opera had a similar tab system way before firefox was even released in 2004

Their all fast browsers and becoming clones of each other. FF and Chrome to an extent let you customize them more making them a bit more useful than IE at this time. Use what you like and just be thankful IE isn't the only game in town like it used to be.

It's not obvious that this is actually a motivation over there. Technically speaking, FF is one of the worst browsers out there, and is frequently shown to be the least secure at Pwn2Own.

Just because it's a non-profit org and people show up to their jobs every day doesn't mean they're interested in pushing the browser experience forward. If the employees were as passionate about making a good browser as they are about LGBT hysterics, FF would be the best browser right now (technically speaking).

Making a web browser is not easy while competing against Google and Microsoft, which have infinitely more resources...I say their doing pretty well.

Easy to cast judgment on a huge group of people generalizing about them all being "pathetically uninformed", yet you're the one calling a site with 175 million unique monthly visitors "worth infinitely less than nothing". I didn't think the concept of ad revenue was that complicated, but apparently it is for some...

Just because it's a non-profit org and people show up to their jobs every day doesn't mean they're interested in pushing the browser experience forward.

Is this based on any real life evidence in any way, or is this just some ignorant generalization that you threw down because they are Open Source? They have been Open Source for a long time, and that didn't stop them in the past from developing a number of features that eventually became browser standards.

So all the love for corporations from the right is unrequited?

You're very confused. there's a big difference in appreciating an open market and disliking government intrusion into every orifice and loving corporations. However promoting hyper regulatory environments which promotes Cronism is something the 'left' is never short on pushing.

Kind of funny how that plays into the hands of the Left leaning Shareholders I mentioned who want a Crony system. Then again, kind of not funny.

All browsers are insecure when it comes to plugins. Guess why. At least with Chrome you are 100% sure Google is logging everything you do, even when the program is "closed".

Your love for google is ridiculous

That's because it doesn't sandbox processes AFAIK. So if you "pwn" the Firefox process, you then don't have to worry about breaking out of the sandbox. With NoScript, Firefox is probably the most secure browser.

I don't think that option was always there... was it? It's not with Chrome, at least. I don't use Firefox most of the time, anyway.

Yup, this really did turn into a "the browser I use is better than the browser you use" argument.

Anywho, did anyone notice the way Mozilla pointed out their goals as like, "improving choice and innovation," and in the context of the change? It's almost like they're sort of saying bad things about Google in a political hide-y and sneak-y way.

The last time I thought about Yahoo, their sign crushed Rupert Everett in the Inspector Gadget movie making him Dr Claw.
Yeah, its been that long...

Seriously though, this can't be good for Firefox.

And since I have an Android phone and tablet, plus Gmail, I dunno something rubs me the wrong way about using a Google based browser too.

Having those items and Chrome rubs me the right way because they all interconnect with each other flawlessly.

Yeah, but who can take it seriously? Is this really improving innovation? Does anybody feel more innovative now that Yahoo is the default search? Is this not just more corporate gobbly-speak? The company that threw out its own CEO on the basis of what he did with his own private money is lecturing the world about choice and freedom and individual expression.

If they want to impress me, make an announcement that they're finally getting around to sandboxing their awful browser. It's almost 2015 for heaven's sake. Now is a very appropriate time to embrace at least yesterday's technology.
