I'm shopping for a NAS that encrypts the contents of the disk so even if an intruder was to steal the drive, data would still be encrypted. I'm have only been able to find NAS units capable of encryption during data transfer. Any suggestions?

Well if you're willing to get a DIY NAS, you could setup a fully encrypted NAS with OpenBSD:

Thanks Danny, I think I will go with that approach.

I'm thinking about using the hardware listed below, from your experience, do you think it will be fast enough?

Intel D201GLY2 mATX DDR2 SATA Video Motherboard W/ Passive Celeron 220 1.2GHZ Processor
Apex MI-008 MINI-ITX Case

I plan on using it as a encrypted NAS along with hellanzb for downloading files from Usenet, perhaps torrents as well. If I get the time I could also write a simple web application to control everything.

Should be enough. I'm using an old PIII to download torrents as well as constant downloads. Works fine.
